I have downloaded the new firmware, when i open it , i see a little icon that looks like the explorer icon followed by the number, obviously a bin file, the little icon like explorer icon through me, have i got it correct before i run it to a compact flash card to update, or do i need some software to open it, i am using windows 7 machine. Thanks in advance

if i can make out what you are saying the firmware update file is showing an explorer icon and do i need software to open the file ??
no you don't need software to open the file and the explorer icon has been assigned by windows it has nothing to do with anything really you can assign any icon to the file if you so wished

you need to copy the .bin file to a freshly formatted compact flash cards root and put the card in your camera and follow the instructions in your camera manual for updating the firmware via the cameras menu system
make sure you have a fully charged battery in the camera ( important )

fairly straight forward to do as long as you follow the instructions

You do not state which brand or model of camera you are trying to update.

Some firmware updates come as an .exe extension, so you copy it into a folder and run the exe and it unpacks the firmware. From here you simply copy it across onto the compact flash card, making sure it is formatted on the camera and update from with in the camera's menu. Make sure your battery is fully charged.

If you have problems with the compressed .exe you can try and rename it to .zip and allow either windows or if you have winrar etc installed, then you simply extract the contents to the compact flash.

Sorry it's a Nikon, it downloaded as a zip file, I opened it to see the bin file, I have done this before, it's just the explorer icon that confused me. On my old computer I did have winrar but I haven't on this one, maybe that is what confused me.
[:(

Thanks Mark, I didn't realise it did that, you have got the gist of what I am saying so thank you

For Winrar just go to the Rarlabs website and get the latest version.
