Hey everyone, this is something i know practically nothing about and i was seeking some advice.

I'm thinking of getting my hands on a D2H/D2Hs/D2X/D2Xs as a backup camera and i've heard that the D2Hs and D2Xs are basically firmware updates of the latter models. Can somebody explain to me if this is correct and how you go about getting for instance your Nikon D2H upgraded to a D2Hs.

I seem to be able to find loads of Nikon D2H and D2X but not many of the D2Xs and D2Hs is it possible to do these firmware updates yourself is does it require sending the camera to nikon or something?

Any help appreciated. thanks.

You can download the firmware updates from the Nikon site and they're dead easy to install.

There's a bit more to the D2Hs and Xs upgrade than just firmware, but the difference in price between, say a D2H and an Hs can be a few hundred pounds, so as Tesco say, every little bit helps :)

You can see a comparison between the D2H and D2Hs here:

Even after firmware updates they are not the same camera - D2Hs is better in a number of ways - incl monitor - and high ISO - up to 1600 ish. D2Hs is a fantastic camera and one of Nikons best kept secrets. D2Hs are hard to find now - but they do come up occassionally.

exactly.
there are hardware differences too - like the monitor screen.

ah i didn't see that reply, thanks andrew, i think i'm trying to try and get my hands on a D2Hs. It will be great for the press work i'm doing at the moment because its so fast and frankly their dirt cheap.

Great for press work - that's what I use mine for too - they want 200dpi files so you can easily get a half page pic in a broadsheet that looks fantastic! Good luck with your search.

Hmm...

See i was talking to another press photographer today who was moaning about the D2hs and saying "you know what the s in D2hs stands for dont you, ****"

And then i looked at his images and to be honest i think it was him who had the problem not the camera. I've used the 4mp D2hs and i'm really impressed with it, its amazingly quick and built like a tank.

Surely for those of us who either dont want to go full frame or cant afford it the D2xs and D2hs are still the photojournalists camera!?!

He has made me doubt my choice now, but i think i'm still going to go for it.

I always thought the 's' stood for SUPER - cos that's what it is. I'm certain you'll have no regrets with the D2Hs(uper)!!

D2Hs produces great images, as a footnote there is a guy on a US forum who has 1,250,000 shutter actuations on the original shutter on a D2Hs

yikes. even the shutter is built like a tank, well i'm settled, cant afford a D3 and dont want to go full frame so i think a D2hs will work well with my d200
