Hmmm.. not having a good day today :help:

Turned my pc on, checked my spam messages then had a fiddle with trying to load some tracks onto my mp3 player. Hadn't noticed, but I'd accidentally unplugged the modem thingy and therefore couldn't connect to to the internet when I tried. Plugged modem back in, restarted pc and connected to internet.

For some reason, my homepage seems to have been taken over by a Firefox/Google toolbar. I've mangaged to re-instate my usual homepage, but all my bookmarks have gone awol. Can anybody help? (oh, and as you can probably tell - I'm hopeless with computers so please don't baffle me with big words )

I'd guess that you have either re-created your firefox profile or had it automatically created for you.
Assuming it's been re-created and not overwritten then your preferences and bookmarks can be found, from memory the path to this area is...

C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default

xxxxx is a wierdo string

in this directory (hopefully you'll have 2 of them one new and one with your settings) there are 2 files
of primary interest bookmarks.html and prefs.js (tho if you are unsure leave the prefs.js)

Use a text editor to check that the bookmarks.html has what you want in it and then copy it into the most recent profile (probably best to create a copy of any file before you overwrite it).

Many thanks for your help Oldgit :)

I could only locate one profile, but have managed to find backed up copies of bookmarked pages within the profile folder. I have just copied these and am happy again now :D

Have also just noticed :embarrassed: that there seems to be a 'safe mode' Mozilla Firefox icon which wasn't there before, so I'm guessing this is what is happening, and Firefox is in safe mode for some bizarre reason. Have no idea how to get rid of that or why it has happened in the first place.

Gotta love women and technology eh?

Good advice there oldgit.

Hint: Don't forget that it is also easy to back up your firefox bookmarks to a separate file in case this happens again, or for when you want to use the same bookmarks on another PC/Mac. To do this, on the menu go to:

Bookmarks > Organise Bookmarks (a new window opens) > from the File menu on this new window select File > Export (choose a filename and location) and you're done!!

Hope this helps.

It's more likely that your bookmarks.html got chewed somewhere along the line. There's a bookmarkbackups folder inside your profile (%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[random text].[profile name]) that'll have backups for the last 7 days.

The Safe Mode shortcut should always have been there, but it's unlikely you were in Safe Mode - your bookmarks show in SM, but your extensions are disabled. You'd get a box before Firefox started:

If you're interested in the files in your profile folder, take a look here at the Mozillazine knowledgebase).

This recently happened to me aswell. It was after a firefix update, my avg also died. Sorted now thanks to Ross!
