Firefox Out - Opera In

Thats it, I've had it with waiting an age for Firefox to open so I've switched over to Opera and boy it is speedy compared to FF. Anyone else had it with FF and tried Opera?
 
Tried Opera, it's reputed to be one of the fastest browsers around, but then it doesnt support, or at least at the time I tried it, half of the plugins (on Linux) so lots of pages couldnt be displayed. Hence I gave up.
I'm still using FF
 
I've noticed firefox also takes a while to open, but once up is fine. I might try google chrome as heard it's good.
 
I ditched FF a number of months ago and have gone back to IE8 on windows 7 and it works a treat.
 
That's the ting with firefox. Massive array of plugins that some have grown to be so dependent on - myself included.
 
Another Chrome user here. Tried IE & Firefox previously, but Chrome is just streets ahead in terms of speed.

I'm not a fan of whizzy plug-ins though, so the lack of them for Chrome isn't an issue for me.

I think FF requires a big bit of memory to open then it creates a temp file so it can be reopned quicker should you close it and reopen whilst the pc is still on
 
I too have been a FF user from pretty much when it first came out too along with thunderbird for email, I am now finding FF taking an age to open first time and running me out of memory too. I only get memory low messages when FF is open and since using Opera not a single OOM message has appeared. I have 4gb of memory installed :eek:
 
I'm trying Chrome at the moment as Firefox has become rather bloated, impressed so far with Chrome.

My only gripe is the bookmark tab is on the right which is taking some getting used too, other than that :thumbs: from me
 
I like firefox, and one of the forums I use has loads of greasemonkey scripts that make it work much better so I won't be getting rid of it.

I now have Linux on my netbook and something else on my android phone. I might look at getting something better for the android. Not sure what it is on there at the moment.
 
Chrome's unique thing was its architecture. If one tab crashed, it wouldn't take out the whole browser. So far, every time it has crashed, I've lost the whole thing. Lack of plugins and no real benefit compared to FF means FF is my browser of choice.

How much faster is Opera than FF doing what? I tried it some time ago and compatibility seemed to be an issue.

I think the people that have issues with it taking an age to open are referring to it taking more like 10-15 seconds to open fully. I know my laptop can take that long sometimes. It's annoying but can be forgiven once up.
 
I gave up FF and went back to IE when I migrated to Windows 7 - runs very well.

Well I have used FF, off and on for a year or two and it never ever opened in a couple of seconds!

I have no issues that IE8 can't overcome.

I like the way I can run the mouse over a photo and read the Exif data.

I do miss the countdown clock on FF for eBay though.
 
I had the same problem with Firefox, until today when I found a little programme called Speedyfox ver 1.2. And this has resulted in FF opening in a few seconds. Give it a try.
 
Am I the only one who uses Safari? FF was good with the plugins but Safari's the fastest I've come across yet.
 
I use Opera, generally happy but it could do with a decent rss reader.
 
I was a long time FF user. Unfortunately it's been flakey and slow on the Mac for a while now and I also got fed up with waiting for it to get sorted. I moved over to Safari. Miss the plugins and skinning but it's hugely faster than FF for browsing and that's what I want more than anything else.
 
My PC is running 24/7 so I don't really know much about how long FF takes to open.

Occasionally my PC seems to slow down and I know it is firefox at fault, so I reboot and it is fine for ages again.

Firefox has quickly become the worst piece of software running on my macbook pro. It's terrible. It's almost as if every time they release a new version they deliberately make it slow. Awful. I've now switched over the Safari for the most part.
 
Great choice been using opera for years its so much better than firefox.

I'm pretty sure it supports Flash and Java plugins. I don't remember whether it can use them if they're installed in the Firefox plugin folder or whether they need to be in Opera's own plugin folder, but that's easy to do either way.

As it was suggested before in this thread, try SpeedyFox. If it doesn't help, backup your Firefox user profile or just rename it and Firefox will create one anew. If it's speedy again for you, you had some cruft in your old profile. If not, clean up all your temporary folders.
For some reason, having lots files in temporary internet files of IE tends to slow down computers, even if their hard drives are defragmented.
The new user profile approach works for almost any program if it starts behaving oddly (if the cache is also there).

:agree: I double click and its in my face and I would say quicker than two seconds. Although out of intrest if you dont like FF or have got rid of it what ISP are you with?
