I'm after a 100mm 10 stopper and have narrowed it down to the Hi-tech firecrest and the Cokin Z Nuances and wondering if anyone has experience with either and can advise whether there's any colour cast. I was considering the Zomei at half the price but this does have a hint of cast. It's easily correctable in post (I already have the circular version) but would like no cast this time.

I know the Firecrest doesn't come with a gasket fitted and apparently it's fiddly to do yourself, but I'm not sure I need a gasket anyway as the Firecrest holder has a slip on surround to block light.

Any help appreciated.

I thought the firecrest was hi techs 16 stop filters?
I had the hi tech 10 stopper a while back and it was really good in regards to minimal colour cast (still had a little bit) but after I accidently broke it off some rocks I bought the Haida equivalent and never looked back.
Superb piece of glass

I have the smaller version of the Cokin Nuances and I've found it fantastic (though the gasket is a little awkward). No cast at all, much better than the Lee/Nisi I've used previously. No idea on the firecrest.

Firecrest is the name of the range, they do ND filters from 2 stops to 16 stops.

It's not too bad to do yourself if you take time and don't rush it. If you have the new firecrest holder you won't need a gasket as there is a rubber O ring built into the holder and as long as you use the first slot nearest the lens it should seal (from what I've seen from the videos).

The firecrest are very good, there is minimal colour cast and it gives natural looking images straight from the camera.

Unedited 10 stop firecrest ND:

Unedited 6+10 stop firecrest filters stacked together. Stacking is possible if you can cut out all reflections (I didn't this this but I was using the Lee holder and it was done quickly).

And for comparison the older hitech pro stop 10 ND filter:

Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated. Yes Rob, the Firecrest Filter holder does have the O-ring so of course don't need the gasket

Hitechs customer service is good. I spoke to them by email during August BH weekend about the new holder. He told me how to takeoff the gaskets without damaging the filters. I quite liked the new holder and was considering it when looking at polarisers but I'm so used to having an adapter on each lens and they don't yet sell additional adapters or lens caps as separate items. The in built gasket is a bonus and a great idea.

They've starting selling separate adapters and step down rings now for this very reason. I'm going to get a second one, but not to have on different lenses but so I can have one with the polariser fitter and one without.

The progrey filter is out as they're not on amazon and I will be buying the filter with amazon vouchers.

He did say they were looking into providing them as a separate item. Looking at thir website they selling the rotating ring and step up/down rings as separate items so you can use either use two rotatings rings as you plan to or have separate step up/down rings on each lens. That's a good idea with the polariser fitted with and without rings, much easier than unscrewing in the field.

Ordered the Firecrest in the end, should be arriving this week. Thanks for the responses (y)
