Following my recent thread about Elf who fell seriously ill we hoped that would be enough drama for a while but unfortunately it wasn't to be. Many of you will undoubtedly remember Marci, the horse we rescued this time last year from Eastern Hungary and who arrived in a terrible state and was nursed back to health by Jan.

We got a phone call about 7.30pm last night to say that Marci had sustained a serious leg injury caused by a rogue piece of barbed wire. It was not known how long she had been in that state but apparently there was blood everywhere and obviously a vet was called who said that she had to be transferred to a specialist equine hospital (horsepital?) based in Newmarket. We live in Hertfordshire and Marci is in Lincolnshire so we had to arrange some emergency transport to Newmarket and Jan went to meet them when she arrived about 11pm.

Marci was sedated immediately for a more thorough diagnosis and there were two wounds, both very large and both becoming infected, on one of the wounds she'd nicked an artery which is why there was so much blood. The decision was taken to keep her sedated until she could have a general anaesthetic today in order to try and repair the damage. The surgeon called about twenty minutes ago to tell us that he had performed the operation and that the wounds were severe, apparently she had just missed severing her tendon by 1mm and that both wounds were too wide to close by stitching so she will have a cast on for a few days and she is likely to be there for at least two weeks (luckily she is insured). Whilst it's good that she has come round from the operation and is back on her feet he did say that it is too early to say how she will be and that "she is not out of the woods yet, we'll take it day by day".

After all she has been through in her short life a freak accident like this happens. I'm not usually one to get sentimental about horses but she has got right under my skin and I don't mind admitting that I'm worried sick about her. We're going to see her again in the morning so hopefully we'll have some more news.

Fingers crossed - again.

Damn shame, she's had such a poor start and deserves some better luck. Hope that everything goes well. All the best.

fingers crossed for you Colin (and Marci)

"caused by a rogue piece of barbed wire" ? I know stuff happens but you'd think the people stabling? her would check for that kind of thing around the animals in their care?

My thoughts and prayers are with Marci and I hope she comes through this, you have done an absolutely wonderful job with her and I hope everything goes well over the coming days :)

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Steep, she was in an 18 acre field and there was one length of barbed wire maybe 6' long between two posts and it was behind some long grass. The people who are looking after her have only the horses welfare at heart and I trust them implicitly, it was just a freak accident.

Oh dear Colin, really hope poor Marci is OK. Much love from us.

Fingers crossed for her then m8.

Thanks again. We went to see her this morning and whilst she is still in a serious condition at least she's eating!

Polo mint? yes please! It's a shame about the blown highlights but not even the D3 at ISO 1600 can cope in a dark stable with the sun shining on a white horse. :D (That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.)

Good luck Colin. I needn't tell you what a fantastic reputation that place has. I'm sure she'll be OK from here on in. Keep us updated.

Hope she gets better with no problems. Regarding the blown highlights - sod that, that is a very emotional picture.

That last picture is just beautiful :)

Fingers crossed for you xxx

Everything crossed for her Colin

Come on Colin .... :bat:

Its been over a week since the last update .... How is she doing?

Sorry guys, it's been a hectic week. She's still in the hospital and will probably be there for another week until the plaster cast comes off. She has two huge holes in her leg and will be on box rest for a few months, she will be coming back to us for that period so Jan and her yard owner can cluck over her like mother hens. :D

We went to see her on Saturday and she looked quite good, all things considering. Sh'es lost a bit of weight but that was to be expected although she is eating well.

Thanks for all the comments, it is appreciated by Jan and myself.

Aw thank god for good news! Mostly good news anyway :)

Thinking of you guys x

Lovely animal.
May I ask what breed, never seen a horse with blue eyes before, or is she albino ?

We've just got back from seeing Marci, the plaster cast came off yesterday and all being well she will be coming home on Tuesday. She has lost a lot of weight over the last couple of weeks so it's almost back to square one to get the weight on her for the winter again but Jan is very prepared this time, all the feed is in, the bandages, dressings and other first aid accroutements are on standby and we have prepared a small recovery paddock for her (just put some temporary fencing round a small section of the field). We have even bought some Manuka Honey whch apparently has very good anti-bacterial powers and is an excellent natural product to use on wounds.

A few shots from this morning:

1. When we arrived she was fast asleep in the stable and we could hear her snoring from halfway across the yard.

2. Let out to graze for the first time in over two weeks:

Graelwyn, she's a Cremello Warmblood, quite an unusual breed with very thin, pink skin and bright blue eyes.

Good to see pics like that. It shows she has made it. But still a long road ahead for her.

Loving the last one again! Almost like she is saying thank you :)

Thanks Geordie, there is a long road but we are used to it with her (unfortunately), I'll just let Jan do her magic.

Marci is like that, considering her background it's almost as if she is grateful for her new life. Soppy git aren't I!

Those pics are beautiful Colin, glad to see she's on the mend.

Cheers mate!

you are undoubtedly incredibly nice people. keep up the good work.
mark.

Thanks Mark, appreciated.

Apologies! Funnily enough I was about to post an update yesterday but got distracted (new toy and all that ;)).

She is doing very well, the vet visited her on Friday and she has been given the all clear so she is back in the field after her enforced box rest. It looks like there will be no long term damage but only time will tell.

Thanks for asking!

Just seen this Colin, glad she is back on her feet again:)

The first couple of pics when you first got her make me wonder why some people are allowed to keep horses......:shake:

There are a few hunters on the land where I go Colin, magnificent creatures.
