Fine tune Lenses - what do you use ?

I bought FOCAL and found that I was getting inconsistent results, probably due to the lighting. I think the lighting has to be very consistent for Focal to work correctly.

DOT Tune for me now. It's not reliant on light and very quick and easy to do.

when did you buy FoCal Elliot - I was very disappointed maybe 18 months, could be two years ago when I first bought it ....... I think FoCal realised this and the is why they gave their new version FOC to all old customers ........ did you get then free upgrade and if so have you tried it?

As I said, I agree with your sentiment but how do you guarantee that your supplier will check and match another for you rather than just sending out another random lens, especially if they don't have your camera body to check with?
There is no guarantee, ive sent 2 back and both been replaced with good ones which needed zero calibration

Yes, I have the latest version and have tried it. It is certainly much better than V1 but I still find inconsistent results. I'm sure that has nothing to do with the software but the poor light conditions I have here.
I don't have a place where I can setup at the distances I need with consistent lighting indoors.

I have tried outdoors, but the only place I have available has tree cover so lighting changes all the time with the shadows moving with the wind.

I also tried the screen method with the moire pattern and whilst this works well with shorter FL lenses, the further you get away from the screen with longer lenses the more difficult it becomes to check the pattern. I also found the image to be far to small once you have moved the recommended distance for long lenses.
It may work if you take your 50 inch telly down to the football field.

On the DOT method how do you do zoom - I tried my tamron 28-70 at the 70 and around 12 feet away but could not get into the band that DOT mentions at all no matter what I dialed into the lens adjustment. Tried at 28 and it worked but do I use that value (at 28mm) or do I do something different ??

I use a lenscal and then a double check on my DIY jobby.

I do the same at the long end as I do for the short end. I have printed a larger target for the long end.

Never had a problem confirming focus.

Thanks I'll try again.... Worked fine at short end and up close but long end I could not get a focus confirmation at all and this lens is very good I use it all the time at weddings

Just thinking if you do it twice which figure do you use ? Do you average out between the two ranges or use the middle of one range ??

Think I might stick to my line chart.... To confusing

I shoot Canon 7Dmkii and 6D which allow you to enter a value for both the wide and tele ends of the zoom.

Hi John,

Did you get your Tamron to af correctly?

Just bought a d750 and need to do the same with my Tamron 28-75, if you did what method did you use.

Thanks

Kev

Focal here too, pro version, expensive but worth it, it works fine all the time.

Thanks, I don't have any long lenses. Max I have is 210, so if I do go via the focal I presume the plus version would be okay?

You should be ok with the plus version, yes
Okay. Thanks. Might try out the cereal box method and if that does not work may have to opt for focal.

Just be aware if you are using both the 24-70 and 70-200 Tamron lenses they use the same lens ID so if you fine tune one, and put the other on it will use the same adjustments you made for the previous one (even if it doesnt need fine tuning).

No don't have either at the moment.

Thanks
