What constitutes a fine art photographic image or print? I`ve seen places offering to do fine art prints, but I`m not sure what makes an image fine art. Any ideas people? :)

what ever you make it out to be.

So if a printer is offering fine art prints as well as standard prints, what do they mean? Will it be to do with the paper rather than the image?

According to Zack Arias it's when you don't have a fast lens and try to shoot in low light. ;)

I thought fine art was supposed to mean that top grade materials were used in the process of producing the artwork to the highest standards possible.

It probably just means they print it on better quality paper (canvas, probably), to be honest.

its an advertisment ploy more than anything else.

if you make reproductions of paintings you'd normally print them on cotton rag textured paper which is the basis for this fine art crap you see. Printers use it for alsorts of things now but generally I would view it as the paper its printed on.

photographers also use the term fine art to disguise the fact their image is just a photograph of a naked female in some odd contorted shape on a rock face or standing in the middle of a field lol

Its the paper printed on. Normally it uses a giclee printing process and paper to match. Google HAHNEMUHLE paper.

Fine art photography is intend to convey a mood, a message that reflects uppon life or nature in my opinion.

Wikipedia:
Fine art photography refers to photographs that are created in accordance with the creative vision of the photographer as artist. Fine art photography stands in contrast to photojournalism, which provides visual support for stories, mainly in the print media, and commercial photography, the primary focus of which is to sell products or services.

So creative rather than commercial, could reflect a photographers style.

Just read the page. The paragraph cut and pasted above is just one definition. There are a number it seems and the Trends part is also quite interesting as like with any art I guess things are continually evolving and changing.
