Hi,

I am just wondering whats the best way to find new faces to shoot ?
I have tired with my firends and family and my girlfriend although very beautiful is camera shy.....

I have looked throught the 'net trying to find local studios and the like but there is nothing near me.

has enyone ever just gone out with their camera and approced people if you what do you say ? (hello, no I'm not a creep but you look interesting can I take a few shots of you?) and what about approachng the different sexes? for a guy do you say (gosh your handsome, wanna come back to my hose and let me shoot you?) for a girl (not sure what to say without it sounding like a pickup line!)

or do you just shoot first and ask later ?

any tips very welcome.

Will

You could put an add in your local paper  Maybe offer them a free print of the best of the ones you take or something. It could work in your favour in many ways when you think about it ;) have yourself some business cards made up to give out too.

I think it must be just you being a little bit smutty again, yes!!

Ah well, that's okay then. Glad that's sorted out. Oh yes. :D

But back on topic, I know there are some websites where models and photographers can post details of themselves, experience, wants etc. Don't know any off the top off my head but they might be worth a try.

Whats wrong with just asking the person if you could take some portraits & have with you a small selection (6x4 in a flip book) of your work. This has worked for me many times & you will be surprised with some of the answers you will get!
One young lady when asked if I could take her picture replied "Certainly, how much do you want me to take off?"
Yes you will get knock backs but if you are sensible in how you approach people you will also have some success.
Try asking Janice!!!

Just a few words of advice, think chaperone, model release form and above all find out for definate how old they are:rules:

I joined Net-Models and after posting one of my pics I had 3 models contact me (who have stayed in contact) asking me to shoot them.
All 3 are experienced models and 2 want paying for their time, the other is willing to travel to me, for tfcd.
Ive been a bit nervous about taking the plunge with them as Im such a novice and they have experience... though Im told this is the best way to get started as experienced models need less prompting and can even help you.
I also approached a local photographer on the mode site, and asked if he would mind if I shadowed him on a shoot to get a bit of experience. I was really pleased when he said I could, but unfortunately he died suddenly a few weeks ago, so that didnt come off.

I also tried your other idea, I approached a gorgeous 16 year old in the street and asked her to model for me. We were both a bit embarrassed at first & I had to meet her parents (understandbly).
I then ook my gear around their home and shot her there ... she's since gone on to win B'hams Top Model, so Im chuffed that my approaching her gave her the encouragement to persue modelling.

I guess it was easier for me to approach someone, being female.
But, all the same, I just gave her my card with my details, a quick brief I what I was looking for, and then told her to call me if interested.
I think this is better than just approaching a stranger with your camera!

Myspace perhaps? I see lots of attractive women in Liverpool and I often wonder how they'd feel if I went up and offered them a free shoot. Time for prints style. The problem I'm finding, aside from being shy and not wanting to get a slap, is coming up with concepts for the shoot. I'm not really a fan of random model in front of a background with nice lighting. Gotta have something to it.

Pete, I find myself with the same problem ... well not so much shy as lacking in confidence behind the camera.
In the 'nail world' our photocomps are given themes, and we can interpret the theme as direct or abstract as we see fit.
Maybe you could give yourself a loose theme to start with and then grow an idea from there

Yeah I've got a theme already for a magazine and some models lined up. I still feel that I need to nail the details before hand though. Give me a building or a landscape and I know how to frame the elements to make a nice shot. I think the problem with a model is that you're in control and the best shots only really come from when you've made them feel comfortable. If you're shy, as I am, it can be tricky. I'm better at documentary since I don't have to interact just observe. However, I want to be good at this because I know it'll be worth it.

Ooh ... a magazine eh!
Hope youre going to share with us when the time comes!

I know what you mean about the interacting thing thats why Ive been a bit slow in regard to booking models from the mdel site and was hoping to shadow a pro for a bit.
All the shoots Ive been part of in the past have had an array of stylists, MUA's and other models, so its been easy to just blend in.
I guess it takes a bit of experience to get into your stride when everyone is waiting on you for direction.

Yeah totally. I've worked with a pro a few times and the secret really is to have a good time. Thats it. Put some tunes on, relax and shoot. Getting to a place in your head where you're that comfortable is the tricky part. I guess you could just accept that the first 10 models that you work with just won't be your best work. Gunna take time, but the sooner you jump in the sooner you start swimming and enjoying it. Still doesn't help me work out this shoot though :D

Try this site, got it from a forum on a stock site, lets you search by city in the UK http://www.modelmayhem.com/. Lots will work for copy of the prints.
