my father, who is not the most technically minded of folk, accidentally formated his memory . the card use to have 300 pics on sadly they are all gone now :bang:. is there any chance of retrieval or are they lost in the mists of time for good ?

When you format a drive you replace the file structure with a blank one. The pictures should still be on the drive, even a memory stick.

There are recovery programs available on the internet to retrieve them if you look around. Nothing is guaranteed though. It does depend on a number of factors such as if the computer did a full format or a quick format and also the operating system.

They may be retrievable.

The first thing to do is to make sure you don't write anything to the card.

Then, there are lots of software applications that can help. I don't have any specific experience of using any of them, but I am aware that other people have successfully. If you do a Google search for something like "memory card recovery software" you will find references to lots of applications. This was the first hit I got in Google and it looks fairly handy. You could search TP for the names of specific programs (such as PhotoRescue, for instance) to see whether there are any refeences to them here.

I use Photorescue PC and Lexar Image Rescue ( comes free with some of their cards) .
I managed to recover data from a corrupted card with the former so that's a good recommendation.

Even if the card has been formated as Richard says the data s still there. Run one of these programs and you should be able to get most if not all of the images back. Also don't be surprised if it also finds other images that you thought were long gone

I am just messing with the Mac OS developers SDK from Apple, thinking about what to write and I thought about a picture up-loader widget for Talk Photography.

I will obviously need to speak to those people that run the site and get a little more information to allow this to happen but before I start coding it does anyone have any suggestions?

e.g. Drag a picture on and it resizes it, shrinks it to the correct file size etc etc

Let me know and i'll see how feasible it is.

Oh and an automatic avatar up loader could join it!

This idea will be a bit lost in this thread. Maybe start one in the forum discussion section.

And to the OP - Sandisk give away a recovery program free with one of their cards (it might be photorescue - don't know the name of it). You could either buy a card that comes with it or put a want ad on the forum for it. Sure someone would post it to you for a the price of a pint or a charity donation etc.

Fudge, I have a spare photorescue programme CD-ROM I can send, if you PM me your address.

Cheers, Mark

Doh !! This is what happens doing three things at once. This was supposed to be a new thread, sorted now though! :bonk:
