I met someone yesterday who reminded me of my late grandfather - which got me thinking about how I'd like to find out a bit about his history. The first thing I'd like to do is to find the newspaper article where it was announced that he was changing his surname from his original Polish one to something which he thought sounded more British (this was 1940s) to help him fit in.
Does anyone know how to go about this?
Have you done anything similar trying to find your history?

Do you know what newspaper it was?

Most newspapers keep an archive so if they are still around it may be an idea to approach them direct and ask

Also some main libraries used to keep archives of the main newspapers on microfiche so it may be worth checking there as well

Thanks @Keith W , no I don't know which paper it was unfortunately. I'm fairly sure he was in Liverpool at the time, so I'd guess the Liverpool echo. I'd imagine the Liverpool library would have it in their archives, but at the moment I don't have time to travel there and look - and I'm of an age where I assume that the internet surely has the answer!!

There are several online resources that maintain digital newspaper archives, and a search should find them quite easily. Most of them require a subscription/payment, or limit free access though. There was an article about them in a computer magazine I read recently, but I can't find it at the moment. I'll post a link if I do.

Masses of amazing archives can be found in the the Liverpool Central Library >> https://liverpool.gov.uk/libraries/find-a-library/central-library/ the have the Liverpool Echo Archives here also. I popped in the other day, and it was very interesting browsing all the Old Electrol Roll books, handy if you have an address. Plus point, lovely building to take your camera to.

Try the National Newspaper Archive. http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/

I went into their old building, when they were based in Colindale in London, doing research for a book I was writing. Fascinating place. Their records go back hundreds of years, it was all on microfiche at the time, but seems to be computerised now. :)

Thanks folks, when I get back to a PC I'll try out those links :-)
