Can anyone offer any help on finding free models!
I recall reading a thread that amateur models are happy to pose for free if they get copies of the images for free!

It’s a last minute thought for a meet in Northumberland in a couple of weeks.
While we’re mainly looking to do landscape, one attendee of the meet would like to try some OCF with models, and I think I would like to too.
As I suspect that most on the meet would rather be behind the camera rather than in front of it, we need to find someone in the area who is happy to pose for as close to free as possible!.
They may end up with some good ‘on location’ shots, or they could end up having a good laugh at us failing to get anything worthy!

Thanks

Facebook. The annoying so called models inbox me every day telling me how much i would benefit shooting them.

you can also 'proposition' pretty girls on the street - you'll get told to **** off a lot , but I've found one or two who are happy to model that way (in my experience it helps to have swimbo or at leas a female freind along to demonstrate 'social proof' ie that you arent a weirdo )

That said, free models - you get what you pay for , I don't do a lot of model work but frankly when i do i'd rather pay and get someone who knows how to behave in front of a camera.

Thanks for the comments.

I appreciate that paying would be better as I'd get a more experienced model who would help me, but I don't think I'd be what they're looking for in terms of model togging experience.

there are loads of experienced models who will work with folk new to model togging , so long as they are paid

experience only matters if you are trying to get them to work tfp.

Yep. You mention the word paid. You'll be swarmed with offers!

By the way, if you haven't already done it, check out Purpleport It's the new model photography portfolio hosting site, built by a photographer who got sick of the "other site". It's an ever-growing and friendly community, and a nice place to be.

Quite interested in trying some models, any idea what the going rate for a couple of hours shoot?

Another thing on the "to do" list
Cheers for the info

That may well be but look at their own comparison with modelmayhem for free accounts? Given the way higher traffic on MM why would you want to use PP? MM may well be very clunky but as soon as I've started talking to models we've almost always swapped to facebook, twitter or texts.

I use all of them. I agree MM has larger traffic. I use PP as it's a nicer place to be. MM and PS forums can be pretty darn hostile.

Anyway, someone already mentioned PS, and someone was always going to mention MM, so I thought I'd mention the new player in town. Having a few more choices is a good thing, IMO.

Ive been looking at http://www.modelmayhem.com/. Ive found over 20 local models and a lot of them are happy to do "trade for prints/cd" work. So far with regard to paying them ive found them wanting between £10 an hour to £50 an hour. Depends what you want them to do (less clothing = more money)

Ive recently joined purpleport and model mayhem and have to say I find MM better

Just managed to book myself my first photo shoot with an experienced model

Neil, hope you don't mind, but I checked out your profile on TFP. You need to populate it with more info to get responses. Have a look at mine for ideas - someone from the site helped me and I started off with the four images at the bottom of my profile. Not had a single no show from the site and I've two TFP shoots from there this weekend.

Paul, I don't mind at all, it's good of you to do so and I appreciate your comments.

The problem is that I've not done portrait work before, so any suitable shots would be accidental family ones!

When time permits and when I aim to do model/ portrait work more seriously/ regular, I shall certainly do as you say as I'm sure it will help.

Well, we didn't get a model for the meet, but I now have two contacts wanting me to photograph them!

One is a friend looking for pictures of her and her netball team mates for their new website. I'm not so nervous about this one, but the other is a friend of a friend who wants to get in to modelling and is looking to build a portfolio.

I'm hesitant to do the portfolio shoot, but she assures me she wont use any in the portfolio if they're not good. I suspect it wil be more of a getting used to being in front of a camera and me getting used photographing someone. Either way, it's some experience even if the photographs are not what is required.

So, I'll be registering on the sites above, hopefully getting a couple of shots to start my own portfolio and who knows, I could soon be venturing in to a new genre of photoghraphy!

I've another thread on TP looking for tips to help both I and the model, but I thought refreshing this thread may help too.

Thanks again for all your comments.

Neil

:naughty: I'll give you a Matt-signal for when this happens if you want some backup and moral support :p

sounds like a good outcome. good luck!

Try Starnow. My kids are all into modelling and have picked up few tfcd from there.

Just my tuppence to add to the conversation - with eight years of running the studio where we have models (of every level of experience and skill) in every single day....

Paying for a high quality model, with lots of experience doesn't cost a lot of money necessarily and the result you obtain will be astronomically better than working with someone with no experience.

TFP (time for prints) is all very well if both you and the model have something to offer each other. If you have no experience of shooting models, then you're only likely to attract models that have little or no experience of being photographed on a TFP basis.

A very experienced, fully clothed model need not cost more than £20-£30 per hour. It is a wise investment in your photography.

Agree 100%. Many tfp shoots are one-sided and very often one party doesn't really get equal benefit.

It's a few years since I shot 'models' but I actually preferred to pay an experienced model who not only performed well and quickly to produce great shots, she/he didn't make great demands on my time afterwards wanting photoshopped images that I had no interest in working on (they didn't get images because they were paid ££), but tfp models tend to expect far more images/photoshop, than the shoot is worth.
