Hey guys

I dont know if anybody remembers my hundreds of threads about which camera? Which lens? which bag? and so on. So people i finally took the plunge and bought a sony alpha a300! I am just at this moment messing around getting used to the feel of it.

I am completely new to DSLR and photography with these cameras so i was wondering where to start? What to read? Are there any tutorials?

If anybody else owns this camera i would love some specific beginners advice.

Thanks TP members for helping me make this decision!

Jonny

the best thing you can do is get out there ans shoot.. .shoot...shoot, youtube is normally good for tutorials though

dont forget to post up some pics :)

Read the manual then again and again:lol:, buy the book 'understanding exposure and read it,then reread it, and then go out and practise, see for yourself how changing certain settings change the image captured etc.

Most of all just have fun and enjoy it.

I'm the same mate, had mine for about 3 days, and just learning what all the modes do! M,S,A,P and so on! Trying not to use auto and to learn the camera!

If you find anything usefull, post it up, and i'll do the same!

Honestly, the more you play with it, the more you will learn and more quickly. Fiddle fiddle fiddle :)

I posted on here for the first time about a week to ten days ago asking for the exact same advice. I was stuck between a Sony A200 or a Nikon D40/D60. I must have spent hours and hours researching all the different reviews and options etc. I ended up in Jessops last weekend to have a look at the A200 only to find they no longer stock it so ended up buying the Sony A300 as you two have done. Great deal as well I think....the camera, normal lens and zoom lens for £399. Amazon are doing the exact same deal for £599 right now (which does seem steep though). My copy of Understanding Exposure arrived a couple of days ago, but I've only just started it. It's all very exciting! Any help us complete noobs can give each other can only be a good thing I guess. I'll post up some of my very first pictures as soon as I'm sure they're not so bad that they won't be laughed out of the forum!!

One thing i found really helped me, was dont just go out and shoot (do that but!) also look at the type of photography that inspires you, its worth browsing some of the photo sharing websites just for ideas etc

if you need any help then you can pm me because ive got an a300

thanks i definitely will take you up on that offer further down the line!
