It's hard to believe this is only Steve McQueen third feature length film. Even his debut Hunger blow me away. The film was powerful and moving, yet without the usual American sentimentality. He is working on a interesting series for the BBC following black friends and families through 1968 to 2014.

I really enjoyed watching it when it came out. I don't know how historically accurate it was, but it was certainly incredibly gripping viewing.
The repeated use of the word nigger throughout the film really had me cringe a little every time. Social conditioning I suppose, but it was interesting how the film made me feel.

Saw a bit of a film a while ago, the slave owner chops one of the slaves hands off for defending himself against his owner. Not sure if this was the same film? I stopped watching after a while, these type of films anger me too much :(

Watched this in SA a couple of years ago. Excellent film and my daughter, who usually prefers art films, was quite impressed by it.

I really can't say that the use of the word 'nigger' bothered me at all. It was correct in the historical context.

I was late to watching it too, a great film very well directed and the actors were excellent.

Oh I completely understood that it was correct in the context. However, it *still* made me feel uneasy, that's what I found strange.
