Final Processing in Photoshop 8v16bit Tiff

So, I was originally exporting using 16 bit Tiffs, however when using surface blur my machine basically hit a way, it would take an age to process the blur filter and would be highly unresponsive when moving the sliders in preview. I have a high end fairly new PC with a dedicated graphics card so that shouldn't be an issue. Yesterday I tried doing the same thing with 8 bit Tiffs and it worked instantly, no hold up at all. So this leads me to the question. How much "noticeable" detail and I sacrificing using 8 bit Tiffs? By way of further background, I do all my baseline editing in Lightroom, for half my photos I leave it there, but for the other half I export to Tiff and then edit in Photoshop. Any advice would be appreciated.

One more thing - whats the deal with ZIP or LZW compression v the otehr options, What do people generally use and why. Thanks

I've found exactly the same thing with surface blur and 16-bit so it's not just you (16GB RAM, i7 Haswell, SSD but no GFX)... everything else absolutely flies but surface blur is a problem. I have to turn off preview completely to get it to be useable in 16-bit mode.

Same set up here but I have the 750TI GFX. Is there an alternative to surface blur for skin smoothing? I like the idea of using 16 bit tiffs but it was sending me close to the edge having to deal with this. Presumably its a problem with adobe's coding for this filter.
 
To be honest, I was using surface blurring as a middle layer between two frequency separation layers. It wasn't adding a huge amount as too much really plasticises the face... I found it wasn't a biggie just to lose it and stick with FS.
