Hi all,

I am nearly at the end of my two year National Diploma course in Photography.

The final project I have left to do is one of my own, I have to make it up and basically write the brief for it. I have around 3 months to do this project so it is quite a long one.

Basically I am asking a huge favour by asking you all if you could come up for some ideas for me.

I have decided to base my project on Motorsport as this is what I am most strong at in photography. Maybe this is the wrong idea as I can't think of many interesting and unique ideas for the life of me. So far I have come up with joiners of expensive old race cars and possibly circuit joiners. Maybe some panoramic shots around circuits too.

I then need to exhibit my work which can be thought about at a later date.

So if anyone could come up with some themes, motorsport or non motorsport related it dosen't matter just any good interesting ideas would be brilliant.

Feel free to ask any questions on information about the project. Sorry if this all sounds a bit confusing.

Thanks once again for the help.

Matthew

Well if you want something different what about a joiner of different parts of different cars put together to make one car?
Just a thought.

What about finding a local person who races and follow them as they prepare for the new season

Yeah, I like that, contact a local team, or a local independant and see if you can be tog them all through testing etc.

Or through the eyes of the circuit, rather than the cars - the stewards, litterpickers, race marshalls, starter, guy who cuts the grass, security etc. You could start with the locked gates and follow things through, getting some of the crowds, the cars/bikes, the pit crews, the chequered flag etc.

Can you do anything with ProDrive - they are only down the motorway in Banbury?

Why are you concentrating on your strengths, as you obviously have that side of your photography sorted out?

I'd be considering picking one of my weaker areas to develop that in preparation for graduation and subsequently work.

Make it a feature of the project.

I guess you're right but the idea of thi FMP is that you use your strongest skills in the Project to make it as best as possible.

If you do a documntary style project, whilst you cna include action shots which are your strength, there will be plenty of opportunities to put in portraiture, documentary, macro etc.

I'd like to do a documentary style project, maybe on film aswell as using my 7D. So that could be all done when following a team around...

Thanks for the idea :) another great one!

If you want inspiration look at Darren Heath;

How about a series of 'detail' shots, something not done very often in motorsport.

This will mean access to a team or at least pit lanes though!

Again, fantastic idea thank you!

I've looked at Darren's work before, he is brilliant.

So along the lines of close ups of worn rubber on tyres? race damage? scratches etc. Nuts, bolts? that sort of thing?

Thanks again,

Matthew

Indeed, maybe tied in with a set of shots after the event, dents and damage on cars, rubber on the corners, but of debris at the side of the track, flags on the floor, almost like an "after the party" set, concentrating at a race weekend at a particular track?

Brilliant! I like the sound of that. Well I am always at Mallory and you can get rather close there so I think there would be good. I like the idea of an after party styled theme as part of the project. So as a whole I could split the project into different parts. What could I call the project or the theme of the project as a whole? hmm. Will need to think about that one. Could just be a whole documentary on motorsport :)

Finally getting somewhere now!

Thanks guys.
