Ok so after looking around, reading reviews, holding camera etc

Here is my final choice to make:

Nikon D3100 + 18-55mm VR Lens + 55-200mm Non VR Lens

There is also a bundle with the 18-55mm lens, a memory card, bag and the Tamron 70-300mm F4/5.6 DI LD Macro (Nikon AF) lens which looks very tempting

or

Nikon D5100 + 18-55mm VR Lens

What will i lose by going for the 3100??

Is the difference in high ISO shooting really worth the extra cash for the
5100?

Main genres will be Motorsport/wildlife and Landscapes

cheers

Hi Stu

I too have been looking at these cameras and have decided to go for the D5100 as i feel for the extra cash it's more a intermediate level camera than the d3100 which i would perhaps want to upgrade from in a short time
Also what sealed it for me was the higher fps for taking pics of my son boxing.

So the extra lenses dont make it a better choice?

cheers

Are you sure?
Yeah sorry, got up to find one of my dogs had decided to make a meal of my 50mm macro lens I'd left on the dining table, so not in a good mood really. but as it happens I'm right the 5100 is hands down better lol

Kit lenses are ok - but probably not the best.

If these are the two you are interested in, go the best you can afford for now. You probably won't be needing to upgrade the body for 2 years anyway.

Lenses, depends what you want to shoot. The zooms tamron 17-50 is meant to be sharp there are others... Personally I like the primes, so the 35mm f1.8 would be a good buy (think it is afs too so should work on the motorless 5100)

Hope you get the camera you want :) Post up a pic when you do get one!

Edit:
Motorsport/wildlife - long zoom around the 300 - 400mm if you can... sigma 50-500 bit pricy, maybe the more expensive 70-300?
and Landscapes - tokina 11-16mm (400 ish ukp)

The Tokina isn't AF-s so won't auto-focus on those bodies.

Made my decision now :)

Going to buy a 5100 with the kit lens, memory card and bag on monday

also getting it on the 6 months 0% interest deal

thanks everyone for your help

:thumbs:Good choice

Where are you getting it from to get the 6 months interest free? As i'm still looking where to get mine from.

Thanks

Now ive sorted the camera could someone advise me on a lens with a decent zoom for motorsports?

cheers guys

Depends on your budget!

For £300 (used) the Nikon 70-300vr is pretty good.

Cheapest one that is any good tbh mate :)

cheers
