Due to shooting black and white i want to start using an orange filter.

should i carry on buying screw in filters for each of my lenses (currently got lenses with 52,58 and 67mm filter threads) or should i start to build up a Cokin P series slot in system? I like the fact that screw in filters can be fit and forget items, whereas im presuming that a cokin system would be a bit less convenient to use but will allow me to buy only one of each type of filter, plus i can start using ND grads and stuff.

thoughts

also what other filters should be in my kit bag for black and white?

You could try buying 67mm filters and using step down rings so you can use them on your other lenses.

If shooting portraits a green filters meant to be useful and if you want dramatic skylines, use a red filter. Don't trust the TTL metering through the red or orange filter though, its always going to be slightly off so adjust the stops according to the filter factor after metering with the filter off or find out how much you need to change the reading.

Check out MBP photographic they had a set of Lee black and white filters for £18 second hand last night. Not sure if they are for film digital  maybe worth a look for that price.

I decided to bite the bullet and bought a cheapo slot in 85mm setup from ebay (with adapters for all my lenses), the quality might be crap but it'll let me experiment with a load of different filters and grads to see what effects they give. and i can always replace the filters that i like using with better quality ones in due course.

gotta wait for them to be delivered from outer mongolia now!

whilst it was a good price for the item, the cost of a lee filters 100mm holder was farrrrr toooooo great...! nice deal if someone has the holders already though!

surely a 100mm filter would fit in a cokin/cokin clone ? The Z-Pro ones I believe... maybe a bit cheaper than the lee holder

Depends what you are shooting. I use a yellow filter 90% of the time. Red filter is great if you want those dark, almost black skies but its going cost you 2-2.5 stops. Yellow is also great for cutting down UV haze in landscapes. Blue filter if you want to enhance the haze and go for that sort of 'pictorial' look with added depth. It will blow the sky completely though.

another silly question...

having a look at prices of a polarisers filters for the 85mm kit that ive ordered..... OWCH

can i carry on using my screw in polarisers and then screw the filter holder onto that.

Im not sure of exactly how much worth a polariser has onto black and white but im thinking more of colour etc. is a polariser often used on Black and white?
