Filters for Landscape shooting - What do i really need?

Currently in my bag is a CPL, welding glass and ND8 Grad.

Also I excelled a list of exposure times/apertures/ISOs in one stop increments, I then printed it off the size of a credit card, it gives me a really easy list to change exposure times for the welding glass without using a computer/phone.

I can just scan a list for 13 stop changes to metered values, it was almost a better "purchace" than the welding glass, I just need to laminate it!

Oh I forgot to say - the metering still seems to work fine on my GF1 with the 10 stop filter attached. I used it in AP mode and Manual and it was really easy - no faffing about with tables etc :)
 
Ah but my sheet also gives me hyperfocal values for various focal lengths of my lenses (correct spelling after the recent teacup related weather system in another thread!) at a range of apertures. ;)

In bright light, you can usually meter and AF with a dark ND fitted. But it gets unreliable when shutter speeds run into several seconds.

For non-GF1 users, if you want to work that way, you must cover the viewfinder eyepiece or light getting in there will throw everything out. Not a problem with a GF1 though (since it doesn't have an optical viewfinder ;) ).
 
Well my filters have arrived today that were on backorder from speedgraphic.

Both hard and soft set of nd grads. Ordered last tuesday 9th arrived 20/03!

Awesome service from speedgraphic, i just cant wait to get out and use them!
 
Does anyone know what Formatt's 'SPECIAL ND GRAD KIT' consists of? the link on their site doesn't work for me.

I just bought one - I had to ring up to find out.

It's a mix of any 3 hard/soft grads from 0.3 up to 1.2. Exactly what I wanted so I was very pleased I did ring them up and ask about it.

I went for a 0.6 soft, a 0.9 soft and a 0.9 hard. I also added a 1.2 ND for good measure :)

Also, something which I was aware of but couldn't take advantage of (due to the size of the space in my bag which will hold the filters), is that the larger 100x150mm hard grad filters can double up as solid NDs because the size of the darkened area is around 85mm - big enough to cover most lenses.

The standard filter size from Formatt is 100mmx125mm. I think the size of the darkened area on the hard grads in this size filter is around 70mm.

IanC - why does that name ring a bell? Did/do you own a Honda of any kind?

£123 or thereabouts, for all 4 in 100mmx125mm size, including delivery. Good value I think, compared to the Lee counterparts. Should be arriving today apparently, even though I only ordered last Wednesday :)

I also bought the Cokin Z-Pro filter holder plus the adapator, which I think was around £65.

I told the wife it was "around £100" for everything :thumbs:

Could someone put into simple terms the benefits/ downsides of HiTech Vs Lee filters.

Im needing to replace my cheap cookin ones and was going to go LEE but i've heard HiTech are just as good but a lot less cash?

True or Not?

From what I've read, with single filters (i.e not stacked), you would be hard pushed to tell the difference.

I think when stacking them, especially with the stronger ND's, people have experienced slight magenta colour casts. This doesn't bother me personally, but you might feel differently.

Basically, I had a look around Flickr at loads of uncorrected examples taken with Hitech filters (stacked and not stacked) and was perfectly happy with the results. That was enough for me :D

Hi Bert, nope i dont currently own a Honda and never have done, a friend of mine does though.
