Filters debate - should I have fought my corner?

I really don't understand why this subject causes so many arguments. I always use a lens hood, and occaisonally a CPL. I also use a UV filter if it's windy and there's sand/grit or spume blowing around, but I'm not obsessive about this.

I'm comfortable with my choices, but I don't really care what other people do. It's your gear, and your decision.

:tumbleweed::tumbleweed::tumbleweed::tumbleweed: I don't want to upset anyone but hasn't this subject been done to death.

But everyone is having so much fun debating! :)

To add to the thread, I use a UV or clear filter on all my lenses, but only because I buy second hand lenses and they all had one on already.
Theres two times I take them off, firstly to avoid stacking filters and vignetting (if shooting wide etc). Secondly to clean dust from inside ... which makes me wonder why I bother putting them back on ... but I still keep putting them back on anyway.
I might try living life on the edge and take them all off, just to see what happens  or what effect it has on IQ (probably only that which pixel peepers will notice?).

Personally I don't use UV filters as I'm never anywhere extreme enough to warrant one!

That said had an amusing conversation with a chap in PC world when I went to buy a bag the other day (I was in a rush!)...

Man: Do you keep a filter on the front of your camera all the time.?

Me: UV filter?

Man: No Circular polarising filter...

Me: Er no.

Man: Oh I do, I'm a professional I've used Hassleblads and all sorts and always use one.

Me: That's great now if you'll excuse me..

Man goes on to buy PC world UV filter!

salty/sandy spray is a time for a filter on the front IMO - I know that the salt shouldn't tarnish the coatings but they are situations where I worry

that , and any situation where there's a lot of mud, water, dust , paint or whatever flying about,

I don't bother for every day photography unless its peeing down and ive got two lenses you can't put a uv on anyway because of curvature.

however its a pointless argument anyway - do what you think best , and let the other guy do likewise - there's nowt worth arguing about
