Hello just got a 500d, do I need to buy a filter? If so which one do I need? Am a newbie! Thanks in advance

There are lots of types of filters, so it depends what you want to shoot. If you mean just a filter for protecting the lens, they really aren't necessary unless using using the camera in conditions that could physically harm the lens.

True, although some people will always suggest fitting at least a UV filter as they're relatively cheap and do offer some protection to the lens.

Circular Polarising Filters (CPLs) are also almost an essential purchase to minimise reflections and help capture those deep blue skies.

Personally haven't tried any of the other dedicated filters, although am hoping to get a cokin P holder and ND filters for xmas
:D

tried putting on some filters on the 500d , it seemed that the camera calibrated WB accordingly.

+ what others said - UV for lens protection, CPL for reflection minimisation.

Thanks....how I do know what UV lens to buy? Do I use it for all shots or just outside?

UV protection is useless unless you use the filter on film. all dslr's have built-in UV protection.

but don't buy cheap, as cheap degrade quality of the pic, the expensiver ones do it less.

You dont necessarily need a filter or filters.

Most people often use filters as means of protecting a lens. A circular polariser though has a much more useful function.

I would stongly advice against buying any cheap filters (just because you want one) as it may affect the quality of your pictures.

The best thing if you are a new to SLRs, is to go out and take lots of pictures, understand how your camera works and the various settings and enjoy the experience. Once you've gone past that stage you may then want to consider buying filters or better lenses

A simple screw-on filter to protect the lens from marks/scratches is useful if you are using the lens where there's dust/sand blowing about or if (like me) you are likely to accidentally scratch/mark the lens glass.

You generally want to do as little cleaning of the lens glass as possible - so keeping a protective filter on means any smear/dust is on the filter not on the lens.

Just use a clear or UV filter. For general phtotography as a beginner you won't notice any deterioration in your pictures due to using a protective filter. I always use a protective filter as I let my kids use my cameras.

It really depends on what you plan to shoot, for landscapes a circular polariser (CPL) can help with skies and water, a neutral density graduated filter will definitely help to prevent blown out skies.

Other than that there is just the UV filter but as said this is just to protect the lens from dirt and scratches really.
