thank you for your in depth reply

If you ask a straight question, which has a straight answer... ;)

What are you wanting this filter to do?

Sit outside for a few hours, after about 4pm. Keep looking through the viewfinder and you'll see it getting darker and darker!

;)

I really don't know what all the negative replies are about on this thread!

If you want the filter, go ahead and buy it! It's your money after all.
When it arrives, carefully take it out of the packing, take it out of the box, place it on your dining room table, marvel about the shiny new glass and alloy holder, Go and brew a nice fresh mug of coffee, then place it on the filter! They do make great coasters!

What you want is an ND then. Most of the posts I've seen reviewing the variable ND filters conclude that they are carp. If you can't afford an ND hunt for the welding glass thread.

There is a filter that does what you want but i can't remember what the damn thing's called. Price differs depending on size.

Found it!

Lightcraft Workshop Fader ND Mk2 going from ND4 to ND 256 by turning the filter ring. Available in 52, 55, 58, 62, 67, 72, 82 and 86mm

Available from www.lightcraftworkshop.co.uk

I use a Cokin holder and bought some cheap ebay ND filters to go with it. They're actually alright! Once comfortable with using the system, you can then upgrade to proper Cokin ones.

But...the fact remains, there is no ND filter that you can always keep on your camera. If you did, you'd get very slow slow shutter speeds the whole time, and the a300 is not a good camera for using high ISO to compensate.

That one works okay, but there are problems with wide angle lenses at higher settings when a dark cross apears across the image as the polarisering angles clash. All vari-ND filters do this. There are several threads about it, and you certainly can't leave it on all the time.

The one to get is the LightCraftWorkshop ND500, also from Premier-Ink, which is a fixed 8-9 stops.

I got the ND500 from The Focus show for £50. Very pleased with it, no colour cast or anything bad.

Havent had a chance to use it fully in anger yet but got these two last week with it.
Need to find some water to try it out on!

It's a bit like fishing tackle, some floats and lures are made only to catch fishermen ;)

Were your images adjusted in post-processing? Because my ND500 is very blue -

That probably looks okay, or better, in isolation, Frank. It's the comparison which throws up the variance from neutral.

My LCW ND500 is also a little blue, compared side by side with the Lee Big Stopper they were very similar. Lee told me the colour does vary fractionally batch to batch, as does the density.

But it's nothing to the copperish warmth of the B+W, and the Hoya and Heliopan are similar. I've not tried the new multi-coated B+W, which should be very good considering it's massive price.

Personally, I prefer the Heliopan...

I actually boosted the blues slightly in both my shots. Its hard to say, as it was very blue day anyway.
I need to try it out in different situations where there isnt so much blue to start with to be able to say if there is a blue-ish tint going on.

You can see pretty well just by looking through it. Then just lock the white balance and take two pics, one with and one without - as Frank did.
