wonder if someone can tell me what this filter is for, it was fitted to my 18-200 nikon lens that came with the camera d5000

 
It doesnt really do anything. It cuts a small amount of UV light and haze from the atomsophere, and warms the image up ever so slightly but apart from that nothing. They are mostly used just to protect the front element of the lens.

Correct. Skylight and UV filters date from the film days. They don't serve any useful purpose on digital cameras, although some people use them as physical protection for the front element of the lens. This is controversial and there are different opinions about it. Personally, I use a lens hood all the time and don't bother with filters unless there's blowing grit/dust/spume etc. I do suggest using a good one, if you want this option though. Cheap filters can cause flare/softness under some conditions.
