What is a suitable maximum width to step down?
I have a 58mm and a 72mm lens lwidth, which are relatively wide angle (18 and 28 flength, but on a 1.6 crop) and would like to get some ND filters.
I am thinking that stepping from 72 to 58 is going to be a bit rediculous (without any knowledge to back this up though). What is a maximum sensible range?
I am hoping to hire a 77mm filter for a week, would it be worth getting a 77mm filter and stepping down to 72, would I feel silly if left with a 77 to 72 step as my main use of the filter?

Apart from the embarassment factor of having a lump an extra cm wide on the end of the camera, is there a reduction in image quality (can't really think why, reflections would be larger angle perhaps)?

A quick google search reveals that you can actually get a stepping ring that goes from 72-58mm which surprised me, but they all were in the USA, I'd imagined you'd have to go 72-68,68-60something and so on down to 58mm, which would have caused vingetting(sp).

Do a search and see if there is anything your happy going for.

Wow, I assumed the same, thanks for that. I guess that if you can go straight there, it makes [very little] little difference to optical characteristics, compared to the couple of cm I was thinking it would do.
Thanks,
