Having decided I just cannot justify the expense of Lee Filters at this stage of my photographic learning curve I am now looking at Cokin ones.

What I cannot work out is whether I need the P series or the Z Pro series.

The lenses I will be primarily using them with are

28-105mm

and hopefully

10-24mm

Both of these lens have filter size rings of 77mm.

I intend using the filters for my favourite subject of landscapes predominantly.

Any guidance, and recommendations would be appreciated.

I know Lee are deemed the best, but I have to control my spending at the moment having bought a lot of equipment in the last 9 months, and Cokin have been around a long time so surely cannot be that bad.

thanks
Andrew

Any of these filters will have some negative effect on the sharpness of the photo. However for landscapes the noticeable effect will be very little if any.

I have the Cokin P series and when used for the right type of photos and in good light they work very well. You can buy second hand Cokin holders for peanuts on Ebay but you will also need to add a 77mm adaptor ring as the holders are usually supplied new with a 52mm adaptor. My 77mm adaptor ring cost about £1.70 from Amazon. The Cokin filters themselves vary but start around £4ish.

the cokin p series would be fine to use on the 28-105, but im pretty certain youl get some vignetting on the wide angle lens....

its normally recommended to use the z pro's with wide angles.....

ive got numerous cokin filters, and have recently purchased some hi-tech branded nd grads, as the cokin grads are limiting when it comes to use.... with the cokin filters you cant adjust where the grad starts from, whereas the hi-tech filters arent square so you can slide them up and down for better picture composition- well worth the money... (about £30 for 3 filters)

another thing to consider is that some of the cokins have a high colour cast, the hi-tech less so and i believe the lee filters even less so... but for me it makes no difference as only taking pics for personal pleasure.

once youve got the filter holder i would also invest in a hood for it aswell.... as its fab for limiting unwanted light exposure
