Afternoon All,

This may sound like a total newbie question but it got me thinking!

Bascially i've bought myself a UV filter and a polarizer filter.....Can I use my polarizer filter ontop of my uv filter? Or should I just be using 1 at a time.

Thanks

What he said. but always carry the uv to use in dusty, grity or sandy conditions. ie beach etc.

I always have a UV filter attached, a good quality one though. It's far cheaper to replace the filter than lens should anything happen to it, plus they are easier to clean.
I remove the UV when using a polariser.

Both filters I have a Jessops! I took some pictures at the weekend with both filters on my camera! I wasn't 100% sure so i thought i'd ask

Thanks for the speedy replies

I use UV on my lens, and then take it off when I want to use the CPL

I do, even a quality UV filter is a lot cheaper to replace than the front element of a £1500 lens...

Your choice. I've shot motorsport fairly regularly for the last three years and not had a problem. I always use the lens hood, which on a Sigma 100-300 f/4 is quite deep.

You can.. but there'd be no advantage. On a digital camera a UV is just a protecting filter, so having it on as well as a polarising filter wouldn't give any advantage that I can see.

Please god, do not let this turn into ANOTHER debate about having a UV or not.. *begs*

Just watch for it vignetting if you're using stacked filters on a wide angle lens....
I always keep a UV on too but that's a whole other thread.

I used a polarising filter on top of a UV filter at the weekend and now they are stuck together, Ive tried everything to try and get them apart. Any suggestions?????????
After this Im worried that the filter gets stuck on the lens and I cant get it off.

Elastic bands or rubber gloves!

errrm.. all I can say is try not to press when trying to unwind if possible..

Place them face down on a table with the UV uppermost. Use a spotlight type lamp pointing down from above to gently heat them up for about 10 mins.

The UV being the receiving thread is a fraction greater in circumference so even if they are the same type of metal it will expand a fraction more. Likewise its closer to the heat source and it’s on the outside of the polariser thread and as such should heat up a fraction more making it expand a fraction more.

Result should be an easy unscrew.

M.

Don't tighten the filter in the first place. They do not need it.
