Any special preferences for makes of filter.

I bought a Kenco circular polarizer recently and quickly formed the view that it's effect was decidedly slight.
I still have a Hoya polarizer left over from my 35 mm days and recalled that it had a dramatic effect. Unfortunately it does not fit any of my current lenses.

However, I have had a look through both filters side by side and the Hoya is well ahead with good colour saturation and reflection controlling properties.

Also, does anyone know what brands of filters are actually made by manufacturers other than the brand name on the filter.

I like the B+W range but they are hefty on price. Quality is awesome though.

I also had a problem with a Kenco, straight forward UV this time on a 70-200mm f4. I was on the verge of binning the lens because I thought it was shocking. Then I read a thread on here where someone posted the difference on a 100-400mm lens with and without the UV on and it really was noticeable!

I took off the UV and I love the 70-200mm! It's actually as sharp as a tack. It was the damn filter all along. I sometimes keep them on my lenses in transit and until it's on the camera and ready to go. I'll often remove them now though.

I've not tried different polarisers but I'm not surprised at your findings.

lso, does anyone know what brands of filters are actually made by manufacturers other than the brand name on the filter.

Kenko / Hoya / Kood and Marumi all use Tokina (Hoya) glass.

B&W use Schott (Leica).

I eventually bit the bullet and went for Lee filters. I have no regrets as they are excellent quality.
Just a thought, but is your Hoya filter smaller or larger than your existing lens filter sizes? If its bigger then you can buy step up rings and still use it. :)

Thanks folks.

I'll have a look at Lee & B&W.

My old polariser is larger and could be used with a stepping ring, but the lens hood would not then fit.

Isn't it difficult to turn the polariser with a hood on? When I use one I use my hand as a shield against flare if needed.

That could be an answer or find one these old hoods that screw into the filter thread.
Used to get rubber collapsible ones.

Have you tried the Hama filters I have just bought a brand new Hama ***** PL CIR (IV) from amazon for £11 which seems a bargain
