Hi guys, this is probably a stupid question but im looking at buying a 10stop filter for some long exposures. I have a Cokin p style filter system but i dont want to pay the money for a proper filter (lee big stopper etc) until I have got used to using filters. My question is this. If I buy a filter set including ND2,4 and 8 filters, can I just double them up to create the 10 stop effect that I want?

No, stacking filters is a bad idea at the best of times for image quality, unless there is no alternative. And doing that with a Cokin P-system holder wouldn't work well at all as there would be no light tight seal to the lens.

Your best bet on a budget is the Haida 3.0 extreme ND filter, about £40 from CameraGear UK on e bay, or Premier-Ink.

I wish I had ask you about this and not the guy at one of our local camera shops. Geez I have been tring so hard to like this shop and they are making it hard for me to do so. I have a 3 stop cokin gd filter but it was not dark enough so I went back to find a darker one. They only had the 3 stop and the sales guy recommend I stack them to get 6 stops. I even question this approach and he said "oh it will be fine". I can't begin to tell you how not fine it turned out. Aweful colour, vignetting beyond belief and just a really bad experience over all. So you are correct sir when you say no stacking (at least for p series filters). The whole experience has made me think about cutting my losses and getting a lee system or something with a better quality.
