Can anybody recommend a UV filter for a Canon 70-200 f2.8 is Mkii, I've done some testing with my other lenses and found filters can make a massive difference?
I would be interested hear other people's opinions before I purchase a filter for this lens.

I personally do not use them, you spend what is a small fortune on the best glass around then stick another cheaper piece in front of it, not for me, always have the hood on so end is protected.

You will get alot of answers for and against filters but if you really want to put one on spend the money and get a good one like a hoya or something.

What he said....

Just make sure you have the hood on every time you use it. If you are doing something that is likely to throw crap directly at you, dont shoot it !

Thanks for the replies, not using one is kind of what I've thought myself after the few tests’ I've done with mine so far.

That said what would your choice of UV filter be if you wanted to use one?

I generally don't use UV filters on my lenses but there are times when it's handy to put one on! I have a decent Hoya one on my 70-200mm f/2.8 II but I generally only have it fitted in bad weather or if I'm shooting motorsport.

As I shot this, I heard a tiny little 'tink' from the front of my lens... Luckily, the big stones missed me but a tiny one bounced off the rim of the UV filter I had fitted and left a tiny bright metal mark on it! :)

Great pic Si, specifically showing the debris that could be thrown at you and more importantly your precious L Glass....Your example is typical of a time when a filter is an absolute necessity.
