Im looking at buying a 10 stop ND filter to have a play about with .It will be screwing on to a 67mm ended lens but will I be better off buying a 77mm filter and step up ring or is there no benefit buying a slightly larger filter and just stick to buying the 67mm .Will there be any image quality loss due to the step up ring making the gap bigger between lens and filter ?
I will apologise know if this is a daft question but im new to filters .

There's less chance of vignetting if you buy a larger filter and use a step up ring and there's rarely any negative effects. I'd advise buying the largest that you're likely to need but if you're not going to need bigger than 67mm then a 72m filter is going to save you a few quid.

Unless you need to use it on a bigger lens I'd just stick with the 67mm. A low profile filter won't introduce much vignetting, and you'll still be able to use the lens hood.

its to go on my D7100 and the 18-105mm lens .
Do you still need to use a hood on a ND filter ?

maybe more so as its probably more suspetible to reflections and flares etc

a bit of mixed answers there , so would it be best to get the 67mm so I can use the hood and just crop any vignetting if needed ?

You don't need to crop- minor vignetting should be correctable in post processing.
