Hi - as a relatively newbie to photography I am seeking some advice on the wide range of screw-in filters that seem to be available, and the relative price differentials between brands/quality etc.

With the kit I am generally using (Nikon D80, Nikon 18-55, 55-200 VR lenses), will I be able to see any visible difference between, for example, a top of the range Hoya CPL filter, and a the cheaper brands?

I am a strong believe in the adage that you get what you pay for, but in this case I wanted to get some more experienced advice.

TIA

Iain

Hi Iain,
The adage holds true with filters. It is worth buying top quality filters. No point in putting poor glass in front of a good lens. :)

I thought that might be the case - any advice on the best (read cheapest) places to source filters from?

You could try ebay, warehouseexpress, Bristol Cameras, Park Cameras....
Google the filter you're after and compare prices.
If you decide on warehouseexpress, I'd recommend phoning to check stock. My own experience and that of friends is that the stock level is not always accurate. ;)
