So, its that time of year when I think about buying a few DVDs to watch over Christmas. Went into Borders and was completely devoid of inspiration. I don't go the cinema very often and I'm not really up on what's good and not good (except that I heard Pirates of the Caribbean was pants).

So what have you seen recently that you thought was good?

Cheers

last night we watched Casino Royale on t' dvd and I must say its as good the tenth time as the first (wierdo)

But as a good film that you may need for a pressie buy 'Kind Hearts and Coronets'.........its a masterpiece.

The last Pirates was pants (IMO), sorry MattyH. If you're looking for a cracking film and watched and liked the first two then my recommendation would be The Bourne Ultimatum, which is out the first week in December, I think. If you haven't seen the first two Bourne's (Idenity and Supremacy) then I definetely recommend them too :)

Blood Diamond was amazing in my opinion! Also a really random film called Heaven - italian and english with subtitles, and with absolutely breathtaking scenery. Hmm also Pans Labyrinth is visually brilliant and something a bit different :)

Watched "Reign over me" a couple of days ago and thought it was awesome, easily Adam Sandlers best so far.

Went to the cinema with the kids yesterday to see Stardust. An absolutely cracking family film. I was really surprised how much I enjoyed it! It's got everything going for it and will appeal to kids and adults alike. It's worth seeing just for Ricki Jervais' 5 minute appearance - so funny!

I've just watched 300 today and I thought that was really good as well,

Watched it last night with my mates, its a good film action blood and gore wise but plot wise its a bit funny lol .

If there's one reason not to buy a film, that would be it!

Haven't really watched any decent films recently, but if you haven't seen it, Sin City was fab! Mr Bean's Holiday is quite funny too.

I havent seen the 'Bourne' films so thanks for that as I have some pressie dvd buying to do myself.

I watched 'Heaven' two days ago and I really enjoyed it too.

There's not much I fancy out there at the mo so unless I get some good suggestions from here, I may revert to some oldies like 'Blade Runner' (cant go wrong) and 'Caberet'.

Jacques Tati - Jours du Fete. A brilliant classic French comedy.

Saw Blood Diamond and Spiderman 3 on DVD the other night. Last time me and the wife went to the picture we saw The Bourne Ultimatum...that was good better than the first two.

But the best film we have seen for 2007 is................Transformers !!!

Thanks,

Paul

Thanks all - some good suggestions there. There seems to be a bit of a Bourne fan club on here - and I haven't seen any of them, so will check them out

Hmm also Pans Labyrinth is visually brilliant and something a bit different :)

Its already on the list - I've got a copy but not yet watched it. It really appeals - looking forward to that one.

Pans is amazing!! i will warn u now though, its a lot more violent than advertised! lol so maybe not child-friendly in terms of family viewing!! :D

No children, no family issues - just me and my g/f :-)

Fracture
Die Hard 4
Hot Fuzz
Casino Royale
Blood Diamond

They are all very good films. But if you want something very interesting and visually stunning get the Planet Earth box set to watch over christmas, especially in HD!!

Ohh Hot Fuzz - brilliant!
Die Hard 4.0 - totally watchable, shoot-em-up, no brain required, great film
Casino Royale - Daniel Craig in tiny little shorts - so hot  and the film is great too :)

Hot Fuzz is one of the films we did see this year - loved it.

Watched the following in the last week:
Transformers - 10/10 just for the audio!
Die Hard 4 - 9/10
Deja Vu - 7/10 only gets that for Denzel's acting
Hollywoodland - 7/10 bit slow but great acting & visuals

I agree with the Bourne vibe - I will definately buy the 3rd
Also looking to get the 3rd Shrek & Ratatouille (sp?) - for the kids obviously :$ (look I know they're 22 & 25 now but they're still my kids!)

Paul ;)

PS - Why not sign up for a FREE month's DVD rental over at CD-WOW - You get a free CD worth £7.95 for your trouble

Just went and had a look at some of my DVD's - slightly older films but still definitely worth a watch - The Departed, V for Vendetta, The Pursuit of Happyness, American Beauty and The Green Mile...

Deathproof
Terror planet
American gangster
Stardust
1408

to name but a few

Went to watch Beowolf the other night... it was a bit of a mixture, but pretty good overall :)

Did you watch it in 3D.
Saw it at the IMAX in manchester in 3D. Fab film.

I can't say i have seen many exceptional films recently, although i will say Transformers, Bourne Ultimatum, and Pans Labyrinth are worth checking out.These aren't exactly new films, but are a MUST watch (if you haven't already seen them) imho;

Dead Man's Shoes
Man On Fire
Renaissance(French language version is thre best)
Leon

Admittedly, they aren't exactly happy xmas films...but to set that one straight you can't beat Elf!

Dead mans shoes is very good. some bits are funny but theres also some very gritty almost uncomfortable bits in it. what it if you like british cinema.

Eoghan

Run Fat Boy Run
Shoot em up
Stardust
Good Luck Chuck..

All good films.. take tissues with you for Good Luck Chuck.. and no its not Sad...:thumbs::thumbs:

I've not seen it myself, but see a fair few adverts for velvia 50... thats meant to be good isn't it?

Come on, someone had to make the joke eventually

Dont forget The Life Of Brian.. !!! best film ever.. hehe...

Deathproof, soooooo not my usual type of film, I'm now addicted to the soundtrack, Very good!

lives of others, must rate as one of the top films to be released on dvd this year

3 iron directed by ki duc kim is older, but an all time favorite of mine

Id have to rate Deja Vu, The Butterfly Effect 2, Music and Lyrics and a film called Crazy/Beautiful (with Hernandez...its a bit of a chick flick admittidly but the gf may like it?!).
Happy viewing :)

The last 3 DVD's bought this month...

Harry Potter 5 - Very Good

Pirates 3 - Did get a slating, but I thought it was great!

Die hard 4 - Good endingto the series.

DVDs I'm gonna get when out....

Transformers, Bourne 3 (1 and 2 very good films if you've not seen them), Rush hour 3, 3.10 to ??? can't remember.

New movies, might still be in cinemas:
Stardust - really good!
American Gangster - saw this last night, quite good too. ;)
Into the Wild - saw this last week - very thought provoking true story film.

Older movies out on DVD:
Hot Fuzz & Run, Fatboy, Run - really funny comedies Simon Pegg.
Stranger than Fiction - thought it was a very good film when I watched it. :)
Transformers - thought it was fantastic, but I did grow up with the cartoon :D
The Brave One - Jody Foster film - surprisingly good, I enjoyed it

When in doubt, always consult imdb.com ratings. This is what I've found about the ratings:

8 and above - A real good movie - might be a classic!
7-8 - Pretty good movie, probably deserves repeated viewings
6.5 - 7 - It's an ok popcorn movie, watch once for entertainment
6 - 6.5 - Gettind dodgy....
Below 6 - Avoid

:) Hope it helps.
