Filming fast action (motorsport)

Forgive me if this is a very basic question, but I will be using a Panasonic SD60 camcorder to film some motorsport at the weekend. For the best results, should I just use the Sport scene mode or should I be setting the shutter speed manually?


Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Get your hands on some ND2, 4 and 8 filters (Neutral Density). These allow you to shoot at varied shutter speeds and exposure levels, but capture sharper movement with fast action or fast moving object.

Thanks for the reply, but I am not sure I understand what you've written.

How does cutting down the amount of light entering the camera through use of an ND filter result in 'sharper movement'?

For information, I have 10+ years experience of taking still photos of motorsport event (film + digital) but very little (read next to none) experience of capturing these events in HD viseo.

Best thing is to get out and shoot, and learn from there. Not sure what event it is, but some vehicles are faster than others. As with photography, finding a good angles/location, also space so you can pan, is important. Does it have OIS? Try a monopod (or tripod if you have space). Remember to shoot/leave some 'footage' either side of what you shoot for the edit stage. Don't try to cover too much with each clip. Take some filler footage too (adverts, people, start lights, etc. - paddock if you can) which will come in handy when editing/telling the story.

Incidentally, I took my Panasonic to Silverstone the other week (F1=too fast) and it was not easy to capture good footage (mainly due to location).
 
Well, I had a go with the camcorder and it is much, much harder work than than the still camera I'm used to using. Here's a link to some footage from one of the classes running that I took: -
