Filmbot / free "film" presets for LR and PS

In LR4 some of these are waaaay off the mark. Nice effects, but nothing like the films their named after!

EDIT: Could of course be because I'm working from Fuji raw files which already looklike Velvia, perhaps working from a Canon or Nikon they come out more accurate.

Agreed. Same with Nikon files. They bear no resemblance to the actual films.

That Ektachrome pre-set is bright yellow in cast! Portra 160VC is pink! What's THAT about?

I wish the guy well... but these are poor.

There's a new version, lots more films and supposedly recalibrated existing ones, trying it now...

Still not right.

Better than they were... but many inaccurate. Ektachrome especially,

I've never had that yellow cast from Ektachrome, and I've shot loads of it, and had it processed in many different labs.

I'm wondering what exactly this guy is basing these on. I've got a huge archive of film shots on all manner of stock here, and not one of them actually matches the real thing.

This is why I'm currently developing my own: I've never seen convincing film presets... ever... even the ones from DxO and people like that are woeful.

He is a hobby player... read into that what you will.

After your post I got to thinking, when I use film presets do I use them to emulate a certain film or do I use them as a posh Instagram type effect and I hate to say its that posh Instagram effect is often the case. Grain effects are an example, the grain effects with presets are always way under what I actually get shooting the correponding film type.

Are you planning to release your emulations? ( just out of interest)

Good question... I've never considered it. I might. I'm still working on them to be honest. I have a Portra 160NC and VC, and Ektachrome good to go... still working on teh rest.

The problem is the grain. Using the grain feature in LR is crap, as colour film has COLOUR grain... not the simple monochromatic noise LR gives. I am working on a set of masks that can be used as a layer blend in PS, but at the moment, when applied they effect colour too much. The other problem is that they will only appear accurate if the resolution of the image is the same as the resolution of my grain layer. Then there's the issue of different formats giving different grain sizes.... It's all work in progress.

Fact is though... when I want a film look.. I usually shoot on film... LOL. It's just a labour of love now more than a need.
