What scanners you guys use? I have Epson 2480 photo which is great. But... I still want to upgrade ;)

Am looking on plustek and canon. ...

Anyone could recommend a good scanner? One only for negatives would do.
Thanks

I would either get a dedicated film scanner if you only shoot 35mm. If you shoot MF as well then stick with Epson. I found my short time with a canon scanner less than pleasing!

Thanks both.
My Epson can't scan medium.
I was thinking about plustek 7200 or maybe canon 5600 but then what's wrong with my old 2480:)

Guess I could get any of above for cheapo

I've a Plustek 7500i, and I'm not convinced by it. I got a couple of films processed and scanned (low res) by ASDA, and I expected to be able to do better with my own scan. I was disappointed with the results. Perhaps a bit more flexibility but the ASDA scans were sharper (pixel peeping, I know!). Mind you, I don't know much about sharpening in Silverfast, so maybe it's my own fault!

It may also be because Silverfast is the kind of programme that makes rational people punch kittens and drop kick puppies. Really cute ones at that.

Well I too started with an Epson 2480, but for a cheap upgrade the 4180 is quite good...bought mine at the bootie for £3 or £4 haggled with the seller because it didn't have a power supply, but the 2480 worked with it...and I prefer the 35mm neg holder on 4180 to the V750 and can't think of a reason why the design was changed.

I have a Canoscan 9000F and get mixed results. I think I need to spend some time playing with Vuescan on one negative until I get something I'm really happy with and make a note of the settings. I might also spring for some improved neg holders as it's noticeably worse when trying to scan thinner films when they curl up.

It is about as user friendly as a cornered rat with a kalashnikov, I admit, but as with any software, it was designed by humans, so CAN be understood by them if you persevere long enough. By and large, I can do most of what I want with it now, and the mental scars are deep enough that I have no interest whatsoever in trying to learn another bit of software just in case it's even half as unpleasant a task.

A better alternative to a Plustek is a Reflecta Proscan 7200 for various reasons (quicker scanning and much better IR dust and scratch reduction being the main two). I wrote about this in these couple of threads here thread here:

As well as me, I know that Nick (Sectionate) got one as well recently and seems very pleased with it. You can get them from Germany for about £280 as detailed in one of the above threads.

^^^^What he said, except perhaps can't quite get it to do so much!^^^^

I understand what you mean. I used it for a while and did get some results from it. I then used vuescan and found that although just as daft it wasn't quite as sadistic! It doesn't randomly reset settings or change scanning frame mid scan. Also the support system is a touch less Germanic! ;)

I did wonder if the help files made more sense in the original german... Sadly, any improvement was probably offset by my rusty linguistic skills.

If the instructions included "wo ist der campingplatz?" I might have got on with it!
