Anyone recommend a half decent film scanner that can scan 120 size film (+35mm) that wont cost an arm and a leg? Don't really want to spend more than £300, less if poss :)

Cheers,

Mohain

I've looked before for a 120mm film scanner but could not find one under 4 figures.

Many flatbed scanners will scan negatives however and my Genius hr8 does the job 'reasonably' well but it's not perfect. I'll try and scan/post an example shortly.

Yep, echo Hoodi's recommendation. I have the predecessor to this model and that is superb. Well worth the money.

Thanks for the replies chaps. This was the scanner I had my eyes on. Just on the edge of my budget! Steep, I'd be interested to see your results :)

Three samples. To negate the possibility that my crap photography skills will influence you I've used a 35mm slide I bought years before the internet was invented! The HR8 will scan at resolutions from 600dpi right up to 24,000dpi

You would need to have an incredibly sharp image to want to go much past 1200 or 2400 as you'll see from the examples below. The first is 600dpi, the second 2400 and the 3rd a section at 9,600 (it's highest optical res)
All uncompressed jpgs at full size with no processing whatsoever.

You can see that the very high resolutions really show up any problems with an image as well as making huge files.

Scanning wise once you get used to the stupid gui the machine does a very good job and it's cheap which is always a consideration. Seriously though the Epson must be a better buy, not having used it I can't say wether it's £200+ better.

Come to think of it I did a short review of the HR8 back when I first bought it. (on these forums)

In the long run it was a good buy for me, scanning my old negs and slides has shown me what a really crap photographer I was back then and I'd have hated to have spent hundreds of pounds just to find that out :)

Thanks Steep. My current epsom scanner does 35mm ok ish but it's a bit of pain tbh. Really not sure if I want to fork out £300 for scans from a Holga & a Lubitel tho ;)

Just been looking at these myself. As a lot of my photography up until now is in film either printed or negatives, maybe a good idea.

Does it mean you can scan the negative and effectively 'develop' it into a photo?

I have a scanner on the printer downstairs all in one thing but it's not on my pc.

Also if this is the case normal prints where quite small, so what do they look like full screen as it were.
