Hello all! I have just been given a Lubitel and some 120 roll film which is b&w, which I can process & develop at home. However I would love to try some color film and some colour slide but don't know how to go about getting them processed. Also can I shoot on slide film & then scan it to produce a digital image? ... ... Also I'm new here so 'hello':)

Hello there and welcome!

I can't help you with the development, but I know you can shoot film (it would seem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slide_film as well) and then scan it, as well as color and bw negatives.
There are some cheap scanners from Epson that can do the job, but the scan quality isn't too good (not for big stuff anyway, for scanning it and enlarging it as a 10x15 cm photo it's does a so-so job). Then again, it's a versatile solution and if your budget is tight, it's not too bad. Prepare for some post processing, though - dust, scratches, sharpness, grain, etc.

I have an Epson 3490 Photo and it's not too bad, but obviously not made specifically for scanning film :p

Thanks for your advice Slapo! Also is there any where I can take slide film to have it scaned rather than buying my own scanner, the one's that are up to the job ar expensive for me at the mo as I'm saving for a new lens first! ... Also 'BUMP';)

You should send the colour film away for processing, doing it yourself is difficult and expensive, some developers will also do you a cd of the images which would save you scanning them.

~Hi Zulu, I use Sky in London or The Vault in Brighton. Both are good and use recorded delivery to return prints and cd's. It aint cheap on a per roll basis tho.

Paying to get film scanned gets very expensive very quickly. You're better off getting a "cheap" scanner which has templates for 120 film. I use an Epson 4490, which is a smidge over £100. Gives reasonable results.

edit : Also, I'm an absolute total and utter cheapskate. I use dlab7.com (with vouchers from 7dayshop) for E6 processing. Makes each roll about £2.20 (plus buying an envelope to stick it in and postage), but they're Guernsey based so the whole shebang takes about a week & a half.

For colour negative film I use transpacolor.com - they charge a flat rate £3.34 for 120 C41/E6/B&W & have a fast turnaround, so the whole thing takes a few days. They also use a freepost address, so no postage costs to them, and after your first order they start sending you plastic envelopes with the order form printed on the reverse, so you needn't even buy envelopes or print off the form anymore.

Nice one! Thanks for the info guys, have really enjoyed using my new toy, it's nice to get away from digital for a bit, put the magic back into my photography!

Who did you use in the end for your processing? I ran some 35mm B&W Ilford FP4 through an old Zenit and had to have a sit down when it cost me 9 quid to get it processed.

I understand you can buy C41 B&W film and have that processed as colour. Any thoughts?
