FILM Photographer of the year

Oh dear, finally got my fillums back today, had a quick scan through hoping for some remembered colourful and/or spring landscape shots for POTY. Films were Reala and Portra 160, and guess what, they need a contrast boost (and a no PP month), all except one which is nicely colourful but even I can see that the composition isn't up to par. So it's back to Plan A, then.

Submitted and confirmed, Annoyingly, in the email it didn't look as good as it did either in Aperture or on my wall!

Confirmation received

Well, nearly half way through the month and I'm NOWHERE for June!

I think I'm going to be a non runner this month. I've nothing, no ideas and no time to take a shot. I'm on holiday for ten days at the end of next week and it looks incredibly unlikely I'll have time to learn to take passable animal shots.

Go to the zoo? That was part of my plan if I'd made it to the Ed Film Meet...

I just don't have time unfortunately, I've got life this weekend and I'm on holiday from Friday. I was there a few weeks ago but had the kids and no free hands to hold a camera.

I think I have mine, just need to decide between two a reasonably conventional shot and one that's a bit out there... I may go with the out there shot as the conventional approach has gained me nuffink so far.

I'm having a rotten month, so I can't honestly say my hearts in it.
Something may turn up before the deadline though

Well that went well :bang:

My entry wasn't even in the list...... Don't know what happened there.

I might do later, I would like to know where it went. :)

ah well got exactly what i thought i would get, b****r all :) Kinda losing faith in the whole thing now though so doubt i will be entering any more.

Well I tried to steer away from the bluebell wood shot but kind of wish I'd gone with it now.

Got the nill point is was expecting, nice comment from the judge though. Irritatingly a had a scan with more foreground colour.... Much like anyone else five minutes of post would have brought it out.

On related note, I'm on holiday this week near a seal sanctuary so I might get something but I'm not back till the first...

You'll have to shoot the film then send it to one of those labs that will scan it for you and email the results to you, that way you can still enter

Pm'ed Darren but nothing back as yet. I had a confirmation that it arrived so I'm at a loss as to what happened, if it was disqualified for some reason it would have been nice to have been told why....:grumpy:

Might have a shot, but I've had to use my only web enabled camera. Shot it on my phone... Better than being a non runner, just.

Sent my June entry in, one that I'm quite pleased with...but it may be a bit obscure. Anyway, hopefully this one will at least make it to the judging pavilion..:D

Ahem!!! Lucifer, strike that man down, now I tell you!

Well Nick I've taken bluebell shots in woods every year in different light conditions and lens combos and you would think by now I would accidentally get a great shot ;) but it's very difficult with just trees and bluebells to focus on something and just not be another bunch of bluebells shots.....iMO avoid.

well i got nothing for one of them and the other bluebell shot got nothing too. Its hard to work out what the judges are looking for in these categories.

I must admit, the judges' comments put me off entering each time I read them. This isn't a knock on the indidividual judges - far from it, they do a difficult and thankless job - just a knock on the idea of judging taste and creativity.

The Red Arrows shot, for example - we've all seen perfectly taken shots of the Red Arrows making a nice symmetrical pattern. You can probably find hundreds of essentially identical ones on Google Images. The one entered for this month had a bold diagonal stripe of white smoke with a faint, diffused mirroring of the red and blue colours left in it, which I thought improved the photo a great deal. The judges, however, said it would have been even better had it been more like the shot we've seen a hundred times before. You could have a debate about the relative merits, but obviously a competition isn't the place for that debate.

Or I could just be a grumpy sod, it's hard to tell sometimes ;-)

Maybe when the competition is over you can ask them ? Maybe a child or dog romping in a sea of bluebells would work? Or take a few red poppies with you and plant them in the middle ;)

Since the winning landscapes didnt have a single thing to do with Spring i doubt anything romping in bluebells would of achieved much :)

h'mm does look like a winter shot, spring is also a happy time going back centuries and the first English song to written music is :-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumer_Is_Icumen_In a song used in films like "the wicker man" and played in quite a few countries for folk music. So romping in bluebells might have worked if a photography competition was around in the 13th century :D o_O

After a week in an English seaside resort I think I have my July shot, I suppose I'll find out when I get back. If nothing else I have some ideas I can try to get at Portobello.

One thing that did strike me, wandering around after dinner on a Tuesday; there is probably a fantastic project for someone with some tri-x, a leica and an interest in people.

Doh, just noticed Monday is the 30th and I could have got it processed on Sunday night. Not sure I could have coped with the stress...

well despite destroying 3 rolls of velvia in development i've salvaged an image for this month! And i'm actually quite happy with it, wether the judges will be is a different kettle of kippers tho. It might be a little "abstract" for them.

My piece of carp is in... I've got a few I had hopes for, but my devving always comes out a funny colour (new chems are definitely needed), so I stuck to my original idea.

Mine is in, as noted on the main thread, after giving up hope, working on some crops, and changing my mind 3 times in the space of half an hour!

Pretty comfortable I've got my June shot any way and I've only scanned half the roll. First roll of 35mm FP4 I've actually shot its not bad really!

Tried to rescan my May shot and I still, even with LR, can't get it to look as good as my Asda scan (minus the sharpening!). A shame actually I wanted to show that negative film doesn't really need filters; guess it does...

July's is in and I'm rather pleased with it, cost me 3 rolls of film but I got a lot of shots that I was happy with, too many in fact and it took a while to decide which one to pick.

Well done to Steve (again) another cracking shot, very well thought out and executed. I was pleased with second place as my shot was a bit of a punt really, thought I'd try something outside the box.

Well, that sucked. What with having no chemicals I'm having real difficulty with this month too :(

Andy that's a great shot, the gull looks like he's crowing!

I'm a bit annoyed I had to enter a phone snap, the listing of the obvious faults has exacerbated that. I probably shouldn't have entered this month.

On the plus side I've got to try and pick between 3 shots for this month. The I've got an awesome idea for August but I may struggle to find the time to shoot it.
