Film Photographer of the Year 2017 - Discussion

I have yet to get the hang of multi-exposures! Though I do keep looking at examples to try to work out the compositional techniques...

You can duplicate\clone a person\things by shielding half the lens for one shot, then the other half for the multi exposure...I used to use a Cokin thingy.

I've just got the scans back from FilmDev for the roll of PanF 50 I shot for my Trees entry. For once I may actually have a few pictures to choose from. The double exposures actually worked quite well (intentionally of course..)

Isn't that last one a triple exposure, Steve?

So I just deved some frames for Trees, and the blimin mark I SP-445 film holders have caused the antihalation layer to remain on the film in two jebbing great lines through the middle of one of the frames. Shafted if I'm spending $27 on replacements + delivery and no doubt tax on import. @stevelmx5, don't suppose you're able to cleanly cut the middle out of them are you? And if so, happy to do me a flavour? :D

I've just looked at my SP445 holders and the Rev2 version so see what you mean. I could draw up the shape and cut the plastic with the laser cutter but it may be simple to use a sharp knife and a ruler to cut 2 rectangles out of the plastic. The issue with using the laser is the positioning of the piece as the bed is 6'x4' and the part is just sat anywhere on that. I'll draw up the shape of the divider and give it a go when I go back down to my mates' next week.

Steve, I like both those shots too!

Thanks Charlotte. It's the first month I've gone out with the intention to shoot something for the competition (as my points show!) so it was nice to have a choice to pick from, although that normally means I pick the wrong one!

Btw, my entry is sharp! 'Onest! :/ *Grumbles at shoddy resizing*

I think you had better let us be the judge of that young Woodsy. :D

@DB72 As Woodsy has said the Film Photographer of the Year comp is for photos taken on film this year. As yours is a digital photo from 2013 it doesn't meet the criteria. If you want to enter a film photo from this year then you're more than welcome to join in :)

@DB72 , It looks like your entry was made on a digital camera? This competition is for photos taken on film only. Sorry!

Oops sorry....didn't realise, just saw the post and didn't read title properly. Photo now removed from thread.

Of course the answer is to get a film camera and try next month's comp. :D

Guys, don't start the hard sell until I've sorted out which of the bloody things I'm getting rid of, please. :grumpy:

What? Eh? You bin drinkin' again?

Worse, I've been sober. :D

Got an entry in, it was taken this year on the same roll as my previous entry back in March. :tumbleweed:

Spent the last few hours fannying around, trying it with the border and without, tweaking the contrast in LR, then upload it to flickr and they've over-sharpened it and adjusted the exposure. Not sure whether to try again or accept it as a necessary evil and worry more about next month's entry.

Well, I replaced the bordered version with an unbordered one, ensured there was no sharpening applied before I uploaded to flickr and I'm still not happy. I shall take this as evidence that I have an artist's eye and not that I'm a fussy sod who should have sorted the bloody thing out sooner.

Don't know where I stand regarding posting a re-upload but if it rules me out for this month, so be it.

I've no doubt a minor tweak to the same frame would be overlooked mate :)
Thanks but I'm not going to argue with the rules. Carl's done a brilliant job of running the comp all year, it's not fair that I come along asking for an exception because I'm incompetent!

I've checked and ...
  • Points are awarded for places 1 to 5 (1st - 10 points. 2nd - 8 points. 3rd - 6 points. 4th - 4 points. 5th - 2 points)
  • All images must be taken on film.
  • Images must have been taken by you.
  • Creative interpretation of themes is encouraged, but please don’t enter photos which clearly do not fit the theme.
  • One entry per member per month.
  • Entries cannot be changed once submitted.
  • Photos may be taken from now until the last day of the month for that theme, not just during that month. For example, you can take your photo for “Churches” any time between now and November the 30th, but it can only be entered into FPOTY between 1st November and 30th November when the thread is open.
That means I'm out for this month. If I'd been more on the ball then I'd have remembered that flickr likes to apply small tweaks or I'd have tested it first, particularly as I'm sharing a resized image as that can also b****r up the sharpening. Roll on Bridges!

The intention of that rule was to stop one entry being taken down and another put up in it's place, because we all know how as soon as you press "post" we begin to doubt our choice :D

If you're fiddling with the same image and just trying to get it to look the way that you want it, all within a short period of time, I don't see an issue :)

I'll add that rule to the lengthy list of topics to be discussed and refined for FPOTY 2018 :D

I appreciate that, Carl, thanks. Trouble is that I could see myself fiddling with it all night trying to get flickr to play ball on the sharpening and resizing so it's probably for the best if I withdraw it instead. I'm not in the running for anything, having missed half the year, so it's not going to impact on anything. :)

Ooh, bridges. I'm going to have to get my shoehorn out to get a viaduct shot in...

You can put that shoehorn back in its box Charlotte, "bridge" is the fifth word on the Wikipedia page for viaduct :D

"A viaduct is a bridge composed of several small spans for crossing a valley, dry or wetland, or forming a flyover."
 awww yeah. Although, with half a roll of Velvia left and a trip into Clifton at the weekend, I might get a more impressive shot of the Suspension Bridge instead!

I'm starting a list of things to discuss before FPOTY 2018. I don't think we need to actually talk about them yet, but I want to have a list ready of things to tinker with or change for next year. If there's anything that comes up in this years discussion then I'll add it to the list :)

First thing is a change in the ranking method, so that we're ranked by 1) total points 2) previous theme 3) latest theme instead of 1) total points 2) latest theme 3) previous theme. Currently you can come from behind and be level with someone on points, but actually go above them on the list. It would be better to need to actually overtake someone on points to be above them, and if you come from behind to get level then you sit just below. It's not a big issue but I'm sure it's affected a couple of people!

Do you have a note of how many entries there have been in each month? We currently have up to 3 votes irrespective of number of entries and sometimes it doesn't seem to be enough! Could the number of votes available to use be tied to the number of entries received?

As we've mulled over before, I believe a fairer convention for what defines your total points should be implemented also - whatever that may be :)

Yeah definitely, now that we have a better understanding of the numbers of people that are likely to enter, it'll be easier to think up a points system that suits everyone.

I have a spreadsheet and graphs with trendlines :D You don't get to have an "I love spreadsheets" mug sat on your desk for nothing you know

We can definitely tie the number of votes to the number of entries, maybe something like <15 entries gives 3 votes, 16-20 gets 4 votes and 21+ gets 5 votes
