Film Photographer of the Year 2017 - Discussion

@Sir SR 11.43pm, cutting it nice and close! :D

Entries are closed for February. I'll put a poll up in a second once I've grabbed a cup of tea :)

Took the shot Monday pm, developed Monday night. Worked Tuesday, sorted house stuff then did it with plenty of time to spare!! Well 17 mins!!

@Carl Hall, I noticed the January results thread is somehow pinned to the TP front page still (scroll down a bit), would it make sense to ask a passing mod to unpin it and replace with the FPOTY17 voting thread?

Good shout Chris. @TheBigYin could you replace the January post with the February one on the home page please? :)

eeerrrrr ... can't work out how to "un-promote" the january one (or if it's possible to do so), but I've bunged the february voting thread up on the front page...

... scratch that - i found it - there's a dirty great button that says "remove promotion"... now, why didn't I see that the first 5 times I looked. Need. More. Coffee.

18 hours to go and it's getting a bit heated at the top!

If you haven't voted yet, please do. It's close enough that your vote might make all the difference! :)

Voting has closed and the results have been posted :)

If anyone is interested how the table is sorted:
  • Sorted by total points so far in they year
  • If there are ties then it's sorted by the points scored that month
  • If there are still ties (as there are now with Robclarke and Raglansurf) then it's sorted by the points scored the previous month.

Thinking.... it would be nice to see a table alongside for the first five places overall over the months...can't think of a way for a spread sheet to auto update, so maybe it would be too much extra work.

Not sure what you mean there Brian? Do you mean the top five places over the whole year? Or the top five places for each month? The table shows both of these already, although the monthly places is less clear at a glance. Perhaps I can fill the boxes for the top five each month to make it more obvious?

No problem if too much work Carl...the first five places will probably change each month so an accumulated score as the months go by e.g. the winner in Feb might be fifth by July etc. the problem would be:- if a known number of entrants was constant it would work easier, but if anyone can enter from the entire site it might get complicated.

The right hand side of the table has the total amount of points for each person over the year, as well as their overall position. Is this what you're after Brian?

Do you think this is clearer? This way you can see at a glance who is in what position overall and their total points, but also 1st place each month (in a fitting gold colour) and 2nd to 5th (in green).

Sorry Carl didn't look to the far right  :exit:

So what about a bright red for last place.......I want it to be visibly clear that I held that fine position in January!:D:D

Congratulations to the winners this month, commiserations to the rest of us! :) :(

I'm lobbying for the "points" to be extended down to 10th place, it's the only way @Andysnap and I are going to make it, I can see. However that would have left @Asha with points so I guess it's ruled out. :D

Think I may join you in lobbying :D

Ooh very pleased with that, thanks. I am glad I remembered to take part for Feburary! I will have to think about what lines what I can capture for this months one.

The reason that I originally only did the top five was because I wasn't sure that enough people would enter. So far we've had 15 or more entries in each month, so I think the top ten would work providing that the numbers don't drop off towards the end of the year.

One other advantage of doing 10 instead of 5, is that 2/3 of people will get points each month. At the moment you can come sixth each month for twelve months and end up with no points, and then lose to someone who only enters for one month and comes fifth, getting two points. I guess it rewards people who enter more frequently, which is what we want!

One issue however, is that retrospectively changing the points now would change the current table by quite a bit. I don't think it would be fair to do this (especially for Robclarke who would slip from third to fifth) unless every single person who has entered so far is OK with it.

What happens if you work points out for the first 7 or 8 instead of extending it to 10?

I say leave it as is. It's a learning curve and you could adopt any good ideas into next year's comp.

I think you should award points down to 6th

An, the old Lanterne Rouge...

Carl, we ARE winding you up, we agreed to the rules even if they are REALLY annoying at times. That said, if you decide to change I'll be a happy bunny, my steady drizzle of mediocrity might end up getting somewhere... ;)

If everyone did want to change it I wouldn't be worried about slipping down the current table a bit.

I think (and this is me, not "mod me" if you understand my drift) that once you've set the conditions at the start of the competition, they should be fixed until the end... I've no axe to grind either way, as I'm not likely to actually submit anything anyway - but certainly once more than one month has been "declared" then changing the points basis isn't really on.

As has been said before, perhaps something to take onboard for future years...

Agree 100% with TBY but points down to 6th does make a lot of sense :D

Edit, sorry 7th  @ChrisR

I think it's best to leave it as it is then and make changes to the rules for next year :)

Some times it might look like FPOTY changes too much as it goes on, but that's only because I'm trying to make it a community led thing. I don't want to just make the rules myself as I see best- I want to involve everyone as much as I can in decision making, with me just doing the admin stuff. Once it's gone one for a good few months I think it'll settle down and become more stable and consistent. Hopefully it is viewed like that rather than just me who keeps changing his mind :D

Don't worry, Carl, the community will rally round to make sure you don't know what the community wants...;):D:p

BTW what you're doing is more than just "admin stuff", thanks for organising this...(y)

Don't worry, Carl, the community will rally round to make sure you don't know what the community wants...

And, because the Site Staff really appreciate the work you're putting in on organising this, you can rely on help from the site staff to keep the community in line if they get too vociferous in their badgering...

(Sorry, this is sort of coming from someone who's spent many, many a year in the pretty thankless task of organising these forum competitions only to get every decision analysed, discussed and generally complained about by people who won't step up and do the graft of organising these things themselves... Carl - open piece of advice - If you're organising it, then there will quite possibly be times you simply have to say "NO, if you want a competition like that, YOU organise one next year" - don't be afraid to do that. )

Ummm... intended to be in the direction of general light-heartedness, Mark, but I'll back off now! :)

I know Chris, but, having been on the recieving end of far too many "that idea's crap" comments over the 5-6 years I ran / assisted the running of these things, I've a soft spot for anyone who wants to volunteer, and kind of get a little protective about it...

On another topic... I'm really annoyed... with myself, again! I can't seem to remember everything I need at the crucial moment. Not so bad when there's plenty of time, but when something presents itself I always seem to find a way to mess it up! :( Came round a corner today and found a subject that could be just great for this month. Quick couple of shots, metered and focused, went on my way. Five minutes later I've used up the rest of the roll, then I think, uh oh, those two shots were backlit, you didn't add any compensation, you eejit... Oh well, just have to wait and see if film's flexibility will cope with it. :$

Something I've never used is... I'm sure some of my cameras have a back light button, well if it's not for that, I'll have to look at the manual:rolleyes:
