Film Photographer of the Year 2017 - Discussion

The poll is up for June. It will stay open for seven days until we have the winners :)

July's thread is open for entries now, so get posting!

My first POTY and I am enjoying it, despite some people repeatedly failing to recognise the genius of my work...;) What are the rules/guidelines on recycling? I guess that if a pic has been submitted to a 'show us yer film shots then' it would still be permitted as a July submission? But is it a good idea? Do folks go 'seen it, bored' and ignore it? Is it a better idea to bring in something fresh and amazing? Epoch defining? How about if it has been loafing about on Flickr since January, would that be a problem? Apologies if this has been asked before. :)

As long as it's been shot this year then it's eligible and it could be a good idea, it depends on how good a shot your fellow TP'ers think it is :D

Sorry I got to this thread a bit late, but either flickr or imgur have always been very user-friendly for me. The former for making proper folders on a website that looks nice, the second for simply hosting images somewhere I can link directly to. If people are still looking for alternatives to the flaming pile of crap that is Photobucket.

Had my first look at Imgur... however, I thought after the Photobucket debacle I had better have a look at the T&Cs, where I find this:

"Stuff not to do
If someone else might own the copyright to it, don't upload it. Don't upload gore, "hate speech" (i.e. demeaning race, gender, age, religious or sexual orientation, etc.), or material that is threatening, harassing, defamatory, or that encourages violence or crime. Don't upload illegal content such as child porn or nonconsensual ("revenge") porn. Don't hotlink to adult content or to file-sharing, gambling, torrent, warez, or Imgur rip-off sites. Don't impersonate someone else. Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network. If you do – and we will be the judge – or if you do anything illegal, in addition to any other legal rights we may have, we will ban you along with the site you're hotlinking from, delete all your images, report you to the authorities if necessary, and prevent you from viewing any images hosted on Imgur.com. We mean it." Emphasis added...

So it looks like I shouldn't be using Imgur that way, either...

I'd read that as "don't host all the images on your enormous website with us" rather than "don't host a few images to link to in a forum". I've used them for years without any problem.

@Carl Hall

Carl, where can I find the current leaderboard and could we pop it on a sticky?

Andy

The current leaderboard is at the end of the most recent results thread Andy. At the moment it's at the end of the May thread (here). I could create a FPOTY leaderboard thread that only has a table in it if everyone would prefer?

It's the inability of friends and colleagues to recognise our genius that's depressing... :( :( :(
I cheer myself with the thought that many famous artists never sold a painting during their lifetime... so all I need to do is snuff it and the leader-board is mine! :naughty:

Oh, hang on, I might just have spotted a flaw in that plan.

Not me... I've a possibility, but I'm waiting to see if I get anything better!

Soooo is anyone going to get July going? Break the ice a little? Makes me uneasy when there aren't any entries :D ha
No, I suspect most people will wait until the last hour of the last day, or something like that again... oh, hang on, weren't you one of them last time?! ;)

Banter aside, I have come up with a simple idea that should help stop the 'enter it at the last minute' syndrome, combined with a new voting system too, but I'll keep the idea under wraps till December when next year's (hope there is one!) FPOTY is being planned and discussed. :)

What's wrong with entering at the last minute? It's no different from entering on the first day as we can't change our entries anyway.

It does tend to make for a month of rather dull thread viewing for any spectators. :(

Nothing is wrong with it, any time between now and the very last minute of July is perfectly fine.I just get apprehensive when there are no entries as I try quite hard with this and I don't want people to get bored and give up entering :) I'm just a natural over thinker really!

But as I said, any time is fine. If everyone wants to enter at 11pm on the last day then they are welcome too as long as their photos are worse than mine :P

Don't worry, I imagine you'll have at least two entries, as Mr and Mrs Snap vie for the title of 'best film photographer' in their household. ;) In fact, I suspect there might be some large format stuff going cheap on eBay if things go a certain way! :D

Should be an easy month (anything goes) the problem is choosing what I\you like and what others think for points....so this month I'm going to choose what I like and have put in the camera 24 exp Vista so should get it dev this month..unlike last month where I had a shot but couldn't finish the 36 exp film.
What's illogical is the film (Gold 100 iso) I was using I had bought in bulk years ago for about 50p per roll
