Ok, I have to be honest and say that I saw this elsewhere but I thought it would be great to mention on this forum at some point as a competition theme and now seems a good time.

The theme is; no cropping!

Henri Cartier-Bresson was famously against cropping and often stamped “Do Not Crop” on his photos. Vivian Maier developed only a fraction of her prolific output and therefore only viewed most of her images once and that was in the viewfinder.

So, any subject you like, any format, monochrome or colour, composition is king and add a little rebate to your entries to show that the image is what you saw please.

Assuming the normal time frame is a month shall we set Friday 15 November as the end?

Regards

Good choice and a different take on our usual challenges.

One question - What do you mean by this?

...and add a little rebate to your entries to show that the image is what you saw please.

So you can see the sprocket holes or the frame around the edge of the film.

Scan in a little of the rebate of the negative to show the full image and frame the shot. I call it the rebate - the black edge bit that show the Hassleblad notches on most of mine.

Now of course you know that when it isn't included on mine I fluffed the shot / had a wonky horizon and had to crop!

Mark

Erm, that's not really possible on the Coolscan

Ooh...nice idea

I don't see how a 35mm neg scanner could do this. My Scan Dual II carrier has 6 apertures exactly 36 x 24 mm. The sprocket holes are clamped by the top and bottom pieces of the carrier and can't be seen if the strip is in properly.

Take a photo of you holding the neg and upload that too ;)

Best hold a copy of that day's newspaper too, to prove it's in the correct time period :)

Never used a Coolscan but no worries if you can't. I can manually mask the neg on the Epson so I can add as much or little as I want on mine.

Erm

H'mm maybe the title should be "composition"................................

I'm sure we all trust each other enough that if you can't add the rebate thats fine... :naughty:

Might break out the 35mm in the RB for this one.

Also: Nice idea, though needs even more thought than normal!

Really not that worried about the rebate all - I didn't realise that some scanners prevented that.

Possibly Brian but reasonably happy with the title as Composition can be improved by cropping - as long as everyone is ok with the objective really!

Hope that isnt too different from the norm!

It's a top challenge, I look forward to seeing lots of sloping lakes, seas and rivers

Cheers Nick (and I have a few of those "sloping shots" in the archives.......! )

So basically it's a no dicking about with photoshop to correct stupid mistakes challenge? :D

Nailed on to be sloping/wonky from me as i'm buggered if I can get a vertical/level "in camera" ...Either all my cameras are wonky or I am!:D

h'mm let me think now for composition...there's the rule of 2/3rds and where a girl should put her hands etc and where to chop off a shot of a girl\man......what else is there :)

Oh be a rebel Brian and stuff the rules...

I could do to check out that law of gravitation before loading my camera bag with several cameras/lenses!!! :D

Its not that they prevent it, its that they don't scan it in the first place.

Dedicated scanners mostly just scan the exposed frame, not the entire film.

There's another way, scan the neg slightly skewif, just 1 degree will define the frame edges as composed in the viewfinder, ignoring viewfinder coverage percentages of course.

sheet....that means dust spotting right to the edge, no 10 pixel framers or big blob crops...

What if I've wonked my horizons on purpose? It's a conceptual representation of the fragility and uncertainty of life.

Honest...

15 degrees is a stylistic statement, 1 degree is a cock-up ;)

oh - and BTW, I've stickied the #28 threads and removed the blu-tack from #27's

That is where I saw it Tom. I meant to mention on here when I first saw it as I thought it would appeal and then forgot until I had to choose the theme!
