hi all,

I have hundreds of film negatives that I would like to put onto digital. Whats the best/most cost effective way of going about this?

Best - send them off to be professionally scanned.

Most cost effective - flatbed scanner with a proper film scanning hood.

To be honest, it depends very much on the end use of the digital image. If it's just for posting on the internet, a relatively cheap scanner will do the job fine. If you're after big (A4 or bigger) prints, you'll probably want to spend a bit more and get something better - possibly a dedicated film scanner. It won't be a quick job though.

I got 2 rolls24 exp colour put on cd at asda £3:95

thanks

Im after decent quality. I have a number of images from India, Africa, burma, etc that were taken on film. Some quite stunning pics so would rather get them done correctly. problem is I need ot sort through about 500 rolls of 36 negs to find them eeek!

any more ideas anyone,

i dont mind sending them to someone with a whole beer tokens if you have a scanner!!!

I was looking at a couple of scanners but they are about £500 a pop...bit too pricey for me

One of the main reasons this is so expensive is the sheer time it takes to scan them in, I scanned in a roll (uncut) of 36 exposures in hi-res through a neg scanner and it took me about an hour.

So to scan in 'hundreds' would be a nightmare tbh.

fair point,

May have to look on flea bay for a decent second hand one....or select the images from the negs that i really want to keep.

I reckon i could whittle it down to 100 shots....

Anyone used Mr Scan?

I was in (actually still am really) the same boat. When we got married we did a deal with the photographer and got all of the negs thrown in. Because it was The Big Day we wanted the best quality scanning available and I ended up being quoted about 80p a neg for 4000dpi...

In the end I bought a second hand Nikon Coolscan V for about 500 quid with the theory that I could scan what I needed and then re-sell it.

The reality is however that it takes an absolute age to scan in the images at that quality and from there there is post processing as well. Not only that but half my negs are B&W 'orange' ones and the scanner has problems with these. So much for my dream of hitting a button and go out for a beer...

So what I am saying is.. unless your an absolute whizz with a scanner and have shed loads of time it may be better to just bite the bullet and pay for a company to do it...

Either that or I will do you a deal on my scanner if I ever get through my own scanning...
