whats the most easy way/bit of equiptment to do this? its for the mrs grandad so the most simplest the better!

Cheapest is maybe £50 for a usb scanner, can do slides and negatives too. Look on Ebay ("usb film scanner" for example) - personally, I have one made by Veho and it's OK for the price. Or, you can go upmarket and spend hundreds/thousands! It really is a matter of budget versus amount of use foreseen.

easiest way is with a film scanner!

there are so many to choose from, try the search option on here for different ones and also depends on budget.

doesnt take long to set-up and scan either, i have an epson and a canon scanner, both relatively simple but sometimes need a wee bit of PP to get them just right.

If you really want simple, then I'd recommend getting someone to do the scanning etc for them, as to get a decent result is fairly involved - I use a Canon Canoscan 8800F with Silverfast scanning software, and i've had it a few months now, but i'm still getting to grips with what it can do. It's not hard to get a quick image dump, but to get a decent workable image suitable to print at decent sizes is a lot more faffing. Scanning - Cropping - De-speckle-ing - adjusting colour balance, sharpening... Now it may be me, but I usually take a good evening to get through a single roll of BnW negs to a standard i'm happy with, and probably quite a bit longer for Colour Slide or Negs.

Edit: okay then - maybe it's just me

i dont think he is after fantastic quality, its just he thinks everything HAS got to go digital now, so its more for his memorys more than anything.

how do these work in general? is it just a matter of loading the film and pressing a few buttons? or is it more involved?
