Film Developers

It was your post, but like I said, I got the Kodak developers round my arse.

Speaking of which, due to a cock up on my part I put my home postcode with the delivery address for work when I ordered 5 packets of D-76. Because I didn't know when it was going to turn up and I want to do some printing thigh weekend I ordered 5 more packets yesterday.

This morning all ten packets arrived. I hope I like it, that's all I can say.

If you don't I'll 110% take it off you :)

A package with Diafine is making its way towards me as we speak, apparently you can get a usable EI of 400-1250/1600 with Tri-X, should make it great for medium format where the lenses are a bit slower. I'll post my impressions when I run a few rolls through it. I've only used ID-11 the results were fine.

Finally got around to developing a roll in it, I think I may have found my combo! Tri-X @ 1250 (or 1600, I shot between 400 and 1600 on this particular roll). This was a 6x6 shot that I cropped since someone walked into the frame towards the left:

Great range of tones in that shot! What's the grain like at 1250? On an iPhone at the mo!

It's not super smooth like Acros, but it definitely isn't obtrusive, I'd say it's grainy enough to give an appealing texture.

So far, so not too bad. Dev'd Acros and FP4 in it last night. Have some light holes which I'm not sure if it's emulsion damage or air bubbles but only affects 2-3 out of 24 frames. Will try and dev the Neopan400 tonight.

Hopefully printing commences tomorrow night but initial prints will be 4"x4" so grain is unlikely to ever be an issue. Definitely better results than I've had with Ilfosol3 though, they always came out a bit thin.

Light holes? Sounds nasty!

Did you mix it up at 50deg C or whatever you're meant to?

Good good, I've only used Ilfosol 3 so far, looking forward to testing the d76, I've got quite a busy shooting month next month so should have plenty to show too :)

Light holes? Dust on the film when you exposed?

I have never used it, but my next developer purchase will be Kodak HC-110, why? It was Ansel Adams favourite developer for medium and small format (35mm) films.

I seem to remember he produced the odd nice image.

It's also been well beaten in all depts by XTOL...

Possibly. They look like pin pricks in the emulsion. I'll have a look under the loupe tonight to see if I can find any clues. It could be dust though, the mirror foam has been breaking up and floating around so I suppose that could got in there. Or perhaps it was damaged when loading on the dev reel but I'd expect to see more of a scratch than a hole.

Except for longevity, only available in bulk 5 litre packs and is prone to go off very quickly (okay one day, gone off the next). Not really a developer for the occasional home processor.

Ish. My thermometer only goes up to 30deg so I just used hot water from the tap which I think our boiler is set to about 60deg. Close enough.

Developers in 5 litre packets really are my idea of a headache, whilst I do have several rolls sitting here waiting to be processed I just don't think I could get through 5L in the time.

That's why I went for the 1L packets of D76. If I made 5l solution it would be sitting in a half opened bottle for years.

Same, I would've used xtol if it was available in smaller quantity

That was the 1L packets which had a few problems and was sorted out years ago.

it was sorted out by Kodak ceasing to sell 1 ltr packs. 5 ltr packs are eneconomic for casual use.
