Film cameras and "Street" stuff

You know what? When I joined this board I was rather excited about photography again. Then I had what can only be called a run in with Damien and Lynton. Following that pointless period I kept myself basically to the 52 threads and the film section as I felt I was safe there. Then the last time (and in fact the time before) I posted a themed image it was slagged off by Lynton and so I have stopped my 52 and pretty much kept to the film section where I knew I'd be safe because Mr Ultra-Modern lookit-my-toys would never lower himself to come in here. I was wrong and the Norfolk mafia jumped in in spades. Looks like I am out of here as well. Sorry guys, it's been fun but there you go.

I was determind that I wasn't going to reply anymore in this thread but I need to explain a couple of things regarding that post....

I don't recall ever doing anything to you that wasn't helpful or at least well meaning?

I always help people with their photography as much as my ability allows, and during a nighttime meet in Norwich, even when I had swine flu, and bearing in mind I have seriously acute asthma, I offered to trundle all the way back to my car to get you my spare tripod because you hadn't brought yours, you declined, but I offered and was willing to do it...

And on the photos of your daughter thread, I was about to offer to come round to yours and have a go at taking some photos myself, for free, with all my big fancy ultra modern gear....not just to save you the hefty sum of money you were thinking of spending, but because that's just what I thought would be the nice thing to do for someone I liked, but then you insulted me, and so that went sour.

As small as those gestures may seem, please don't throw kindness like that back in my face by sulking. And if Lynton has said he doesn't like your photos, it's probably because he doesn't like your photos....knowing Lynton as well as I do, I doubt there is anything more to it! :shake: Learn from what he and anyone else says (good or bad) about your photography, and use it to improve. I'm not being a hyporcrite, this is exactly what I do myself!

If me and Lynton offend you so much (although I'm still clueless as to why), just use the ignore button, but I think you might be over reating a little....I'm being 100% genuine here Arthur. Chin up, load up some film, and don't leave the forums!!!!

Not sure about digital superseding film. My film cameras take perfectly good pictures, just as they did fifteen years ago and I can still buy the film as I did then. I have no need to update them every two years, invest in more processing power, buy or learn new software - they take sharp photographs with the same aesthetics I learned to love as a teenager in the mid-70s.
My house was built in 1850 and I have no wish to trade it in for a Barretts job either, even though it's certainly higher maintenance. The cavity wall insulation telesalesman admitted he could do nothing for me yesterday when I said the stone was 3ft thick in places. Hopefully film and the house will outlive me.

OK, time to clear a few matters up here.

I wouldn't say I "slagged off" your picture - Just commented that it did nothing for me and reasons why it didn't. I think I also made a couple of suggestions as to how I thought you could improve it. (Images of a similar size perhaps?) I also asked you how you managed to take a picture through glass as each time I had tried, I got reflections back - so that seems 2 photographers sharing advice and asking for advice?

The time before? I assume its the Lotus behind the fence picture - and that will be the time I said the selective colouring was wrong and pointed out the bits on the car which looked weird (due to the technique you had used.) Then I believe I went through in considerable detail, alternative ways of carrying out selective colouring which would not reduce the Image quality.......:shrug:

However, your 52, your decisions. If you want to stop then that's up to you.

I assume that's an indirect reference to me.......... :shrug: Nothing Ultramodern about a Pentax K20d - which would be the same range of pentax digital cameras you were asking me about the other day as you were thinging to going all Pentax for both film and digital.

Rest assured I don't trawl TP stalking you, and yes as I have little interest in film stuff, one of the few sections of the forum I tend to not visit.. I just found this thread on the main page (which is what was mentioned by someone else above!)

I think it's time to draw a line on the subject. If you don't want me to comment on any of your pics or offer help and advice as and where I can, fine, I can do that.

Get out with the camera(s) and get shooting.

Yeah that bit was worded badly. The point I was trying to make is that film appears to be becoming more of a niche market each and every year. Yes there will always be diehard enthusiasts which is great. Am not sure how many professional photographers there are left who solely use film, given the advancements of digital photography over recent years, and those advancements will only continue.

Also not sure the advantages of someone insisting that the pro only uses film.......

Just to clarify Lynton, I did not talk about the advantages of pros using film. I said that there are folks ( in my office, for example) who are not interested in photography; and who believe that pros use film.

I was not commenting on the accuracy of the statement one way or another; and clearly its the view of people who are not interested in photography; like most average person on the street.

Couldn't agree more about attitude and street work.

As a rule I use a 50mm (and a 38mm). I am in the open, in amongst people and talking with them.

Here is a place I enjoy (in Sheffield) usually packed with people and 'events'. You never know what you are going to find OR who is going to find you.
These two were deep in discussion, so I whistled and they turned...

See, there you go again - it's no wonder people in this forum have a lack of respect for you. I have digitals and both film cameras but I'm not stuck in some deluded world where I still believe it's 1985 and that film is the be all and end all. I rather wish it were still the nineties but it just ain't going to happen any time soon!

Respect.....now there's a word, you reckon suggesting somebody is stuck in some deluded World where film is the be all and end all, is not just a shade disrespectful ?
That's what this whole bladdy threads turned into, as much as the trolls would like to make it a juvenile intellectual belly bouncing competition.
I'd like to point out that for me and a lot of people, film is the beginning and the end, why is that sooooooo difficult to comprehend, and why does it attract disrespectful comments ??
This is the film forum, we big-up film, I don't do down digital, without digital I couldn't earn money, I respect what digital can do for me.
I have no respect for idiots who pile in here a start throwing the horse and cart comments about, these are the same internet hermits who don't know the first thing about film other than what they read online.
I don't believe anyone can respect film without first shooting it to a moderate depth, to the hermits its just a slow arsed and difficult way to make picture.
Even you as a film shooter with a preference for digital must know its more than that, despite your own 1985 related nonsense.
What the hell does film history have to do with anything anyway...:shrug:
