At the moment I am using a 400d with kit lens. I'm going to be going over to Egypt in January for quite a while and I should be doing some interesting traveling, and I wanted something to take some 'different' photos, and I particularly like the effect you get with some film cameras. You know, where you get that vintage effect to really set the scene.

Any recommendations on a camera?

Golly, what a choice you have.

Personally I like the Canon eos 30, the eos 100, the Bessa R and the Olympus Trip.

I've been using film from the Pound Shop and to be honest when they come out they look like they've been stuck in the back of a drawer for 30 years

The Canon SLR's will take EF lenses. You can probably get a 30 or 100 from £30 but a lens will be extra. The 100 is nice as it's very quiet. Other than those there are many many SLR bargains on ebay for silly money. You might pick one up with a 50mm lens for £20 or £30.

I love my Bessa, and the rangefinder is nice and bright ;) They're quite expensive though.

The Trip is interesting as it has zone focus, you just remember to set it and shoot away;) You can get a trip from £5 and upwards. I think I paid £30 for mine.

Good luck choosing

Maybe a canon Ae-1 or something similar, you will have to use fd lenses but I picked mine up with a 50mm for around £40 and love it. Shooting film has really helped me capture digital better so I would recommend getting one.

As you already have Canon I'd recommend another one, bear in mind your kit lens (I'm assuming its an EF-S lens) wont fit any Canon film cameras, but the film camera lens will fit the 400d, if you buy another make or an AE-1 (with FD, manual focus lens) they wont fit your digital body, although an adapter 'could' make them work with the digital body.

So assuming you are staying with Canon, I'd suggest an EOS 50E, the eye control focus system is superb, you will wonder why digitals dont have it and they can be bought very cheaply now. You might even get one with a lens, if not and you are not after the highest quality image then a 28/80 zoom will be a cheap lens and quite acceptable (contrast can be a bit thin). A 50e will also work in E-TTL flash mode with the latest flashguns in case you ever buy one.

Have a good time.

Matt

Yup.

A £5-£30 camera off ebay and some film from the Pound shop should be just about right.
