A friend at work is looking into getting a high quality well made film camera. He doesn't know much about cameras, however his benchmark is the Olympus trip which he seems to think is the greatest camera ever made (I don't think Ken Rockwells 5D comparison helped), he wants something nice to hold and use like an X100 but with film (manual focus is OK). Unfortunately I don't know that much about them (other than owning a Bronica ETRSi before I got into digital) so am unable to offer much advise.

He's looking to spend a few hundren pounds, and is happy with a fixed lens, ideally between 35 and 50mm.

There is a beautiful looking Voitlander rangefinder in the for sale section which looks superb, although it might be slightly over budget.

Any reccomendations?

Point him at the Talk Film section. Is he looking for something with automatic exposure, or to use a meter?

I guess it would need a built in meter, auto exposure would be an advantage.
I suppose a rangefinder might be pushing his skills a little.

Must have missed the film section, I did look, I promise.

Voigtlanders are great, I have 2 of them. The one in the classifieds at the moment is expensive is because it is a relatively new model. Not much difference to the older models mind you. The difference is mostly to do with the frame lines variation in the viewfinder.

I chose the R2A/R2M because I used mostly 35mm, 50mm, and 75mm. The R3A/R3M has framelines for 40mm, 50mm 75mm and 90 I think (The R2A/R2M also has the 90mm frame lines).

Hexar AF/Contax G2 if he wants AF.

Also I'd like to add that the X100 was seen as a digital Hexar by many including myself.

Canon eos 3

and im a nikon fan!

so maybe a Nikon F5?

Or for a more classic camera one of the Olympus OM 1 or 2's, Pentax spotmatic or K1000.

All are good cameras and with an OEM prime on would be better than the trip.

A working Spotmatic, in very good condition with 55mm f1.8 or f2 lens should cost less than £30 (including postage) on Ebay. They are an absolute joy, and you would just need a basic exposure meter to finish with.
