Film bargains, freezer space, Kodak woes...

Since Christmas, postie has delivered a jiffy bag containing 35mmor 120 fillum on almost a daily basis.

I know that 7daysleep:bonk: are stockpiling my orders so that the postie gets a workload balanced out over the month rather than some today and none tomorrow. At least I tell myself that's why they don't always rush orders out for delivery within 7 days of ordering.

Repacking my poundland plastic storage boxes, I reckon that I have enough stockpiled to last me the next 12 months at the rate of 1.5 films, possibly 2 when factoring in number of frames per roll, crappy weather and other socio-demographic factors.

I can't see prices tumbling overall so my frozen assets ought to represent as sound a return as leaving my pennies with the boys and girls at the Halifax?

Now the fact is that I'm still very new to fillum in an organised way and the question is, how much fillum is too much?

It's a good question. I have about 10 rolls of 120 and 5 rolls of 35mm but I nearly always buy more if its a bargain (and often even if its not).

As long as you're going to use it, it's a pretty impossible question to answer??

How many pairs of shoes should my mrs own? (try telling her otherwise)

I'd tell her, basically, what I tell my wife that she should own as many as she likes and as many as you/I are prepared to buy for her. That way she knows not to question what trifling amount we might spend on ourselves. I can tell your mrs if you like but the effect will be better coming from you now asa New Year's resolution!:naughty::thumbs:

Lol, not a bad suggestion that fella

The only film that seems to gain serious money is those specialised emulsions like Kodak Tech Pan, which probably sell for many times what they were originally worth. Stockpiling to shoot in the future is probably more realistic - although some have argued that stockpiling, rather than continuous steady buying, is what will kill Kodak (and other film manufacturers). Who knows.

With VAT about to get slapped on the price from 7DS, interest rates on cash deposits bringing very low returns.. financially laying in a stock of film to shoot in the future makes a lot of sense at the moment if you have cash available to spend and get it at the best possible price.

I'm about to lay in a heavy stock of Ektar, Portra 400 and Pro 400H from 7DS. Once frozen it isn't going to deteriorate in a hurry.

The other half isn't too keen on my filling the fridge with film, so I can only stockpile stuff in cupboards. Spread out so he doesn't see how much :P

around 18 months ago I stockpiled around 110 rolls of assorted 120 and 35mm film, all neatly stashed in the fridge or freezer. all but 9 are still in there - and 5 of those rolls went travelling with Helga. I really need something to get me back into actually taking pictures :(

Try a project for yourself, and get stuff printed, even if it's digitally. It's been a little while since I've shown a client my actual physical portfolio, but I'll always have one and always print for it. Seeing shots on a screen all the time isn't the same. Just an idea :)

Interesting gender twist away from the sterotypical, if you don't mind me saying. Never mind the fridge, what's in the bottom of the freezer? Hiding fillum in a pizza box could go horribly wrong - what about something much less interesting like a frozen broad beans box?

Should I be encouraging you to keep secrets from your partner? Probably not! :bonk:

Broad beans, in a box?

There speaks someone in need of an allotment.. ..

Had one, had the blisters, no thanks not enough time:cuckoo: My local allotments have the cackiest clay soil which requires constant crumbing down so as not to set into 2 foot concrete squares. Besides, where'd you keep film on the 'lotment?

Alright then, broad beans in an opaque freezer container - hey, don't you freeze your surplus beans? I picked broad beans as a product which yer typical hungry male might completely ignore (as a means of concealing frozen film):naughty:

What I need is a bigger freezer. What I need is a chiller akin to a canned drinks cabinet - full height ideally - and what I need even more is somewhere to put both.:bang::bang:

I guess this is my equivalent of "too many shoes" :) Freezer might be an idea... silly question perhaps, do you need to thaw film before you use it? Or can you just take it out, pop in camera?

Needs to thaw to prevent condensation building up on the emulsion. Take it out of the freezer and don't take it out of any packaging till you are sure it has come up to room temperature.

About an hour is needed for a 120 roll and 1 1/2 hours for a 35mm film to thaw out once taken out of the freezer.

Surely that depends on how cold your freezer is and what the ambient temperature is?

7daysleep delivery received today - seven little jiffy bags!! I'll open them later as a little treat for being good.

If UPS finally decide to swing by my house when I'm not at work, then there will be a few boxes of Ektar competing for space in the freezer.

Mine still haven't arrived.... I'm guessing this is normal?
