I have a D700 and have never used fill flash. I can see why it is needed on occasions but I'm not sure how to use it. Do you simply compose the picture and select the normal settings for natural light then simply pop-up the built in flash or is there more to it than that? merv:thinking::thinking:

Put the flash in TTL mode. Works great with AP.

TTL ?

In TTL mode, the camera works out how much flash for you. If you set the flash with manual settings, then it could be more trial and error. I use Evalutive/Matrix mode or what ever they are called. Never can remember being an ex Nykon and now a Canon user.

I assume the pop up works with TTL as default. Check the Manual and / or your Cameras Menu and look ay what options are available. Nikon is iTTL I think.
